Comets rally past Raiders

ALLEMAN — A huge seventh inning gave the North Polk softball team an upset of then-No. 10 Collins-Maxwell-Baxter June 13 in Alleman.

The Comets pulled off a 6-5 victory by scoring five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning in the Heart of Iowa Conference outing.

CMB jumped out to a 2-0 lead and North Polk answered with a run in the fifth. CMB came back with three runs in the top of the sixth and held that edge until the bottom of the seventh.

Becca Ley came up big for North Polk in the win. She went 2-for-5 with a triple, run and three RBI.

Trisha Sporra was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI; Maddy Hill was 1-for-4 with an RBI; Rebecca Rimathe singled, walked and scored and Carolyn Steffen and Paige Sandberg each singled and scored for the Comets. Audrey Ley went 2-for-4, Ellie Owen singled once and walked three times and Bailey Hougham walked twice and scored a run.

Hougham was the victorious pitcher. She gave up five earned runs on eight hits with one strikeout and two walks, going all seven innings to help North Polk improve to 9-6 overall and 5-3 in the HOIC.

CMB fell to 11-4 overall and 7-2 in the HOIC. Mikayla Houge took the loss for the Raiders as she allowed six unearned runs on 11 hits with four strikeouts and five walks in 6 ? innings.

Mikayla Eslinger was 2-for-3 with a walk, steal and two runs and Jordynn Wesselink doubled and drove in three runs to pace CMB on offense. Katie Camp was 1-for-4 with two steals, Abbey Kahler finished 1-for-4, Houge went 1-for-3, Holly Jessen was 1-for-1 with an RBI and a walk, Heather Jessen wound up 1-for-3 with a steal and a run.

Emma Husak stole a base and scored and Gracie Cheville also scored a run for the Raiders.
