Comets go 2-2 at Kiwanis Invite
ROLAND — The North Polk softball team split four games at the Kiwanis Invitational held last Thursday and Saturday in Roland.
The Comets defeated Colo-Nesco and Madrid and fell to high-powered Boone and Adel-Desoto-Minburn teams to go to 14-8 on the season.
On Thursday, North Polk opened with a shortened 13-0 thumping of Colo-Nesco in two innings. The Comets put the Royals to bed with an 11-run second inning.
Rebecca Rimathe was 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBI, Becca Ley finished 2-for-3 with four steals, three runs and two RBI and Audrey Ley was 2-for-2 with a double, run and RBI to pace North Polk against Colo-Nesco. Ellie Owen went 1-for-3 with a run and two RBI, Maddy Hill and Carolyn Steffen were both 1-for-2 with a double, run and RBI; Paige Sandberg and Trisha Sporra were each 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI and Natalie Wilson singled and scored for the Comets.
Bailey Hougham gave up one hit and she had one strikeout to earn the victory. Rylee Purvis gave up eight earned runs with two strikeouts and no walks to take the loss for Colo-Nesco.
Faith Vincent singled and stole a base and Kassie Robinson walked for the Royals’ only offense versus Hougham.
In North Polk’s second game on Thursday, they faced a Boone squad rated No. 15 in Class 4A. The Comets played a quality game in the field and pitcher Sophie Swygman turned in a strong outing, but North Polk couldn’t get anything going at the plate in a 1-0 loss.
Boone scored the game’s only run in the first inning. Swygman only allowed six hits and she recorded five strikeouts and two walks in six innings of work against a powerful Toreador squad.
Hill singled for North Polk’s only hit off Boone pitchers Jordan Trowbridge and Breanna Hunter. Ley walked and stole a base, Steffen drew two free passes and picked up a steal and Owen walked once for the Comets’ only offense.
Dianna Slight singled, stole a base and scored; Hunter doubled and Trowbridge was 2-for-3 for Boone.
On Saturday, North Polk defeated Madrid by a 7-5 score in five innings and came up short to an Adel-Desoto-Minburn team rated No. 3 in 4A and coached by former Comet coaching legend Rick Dillinger by a 5-0 margin.
In the win over Madrid, the Comets scored six runs over the first three innings and added another run in the fifth. Sandberg was 3-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI and Steffen doubled, homered and produced two runs and RBI apiece against the Tigers.
Becca Ley and Hill were both 1-for-3 with a run and RBI. Owen drove in a run, Audrey Ley walked three times and scored once and Sporra and Hougham each drew one free pass.
Hougham was the winning pitcher. She gave up one run on two hits with four walks in three innings.
Swygman allowed one run on three hits with two strikeouts and no walks in two innings versus Madrid.
North Polk only got two hits off ADM ace Molly Jacobsen in the loss to the Tigers. ADM scored one run in the first, third and sixth innings and two in the fourth.
Swygman took the loss against ADM. She allowed five runs - four earned - on 10 hits with one strikeout and two walks in six innings.
Rimathe doubled and Sandberg singled for the only production at the plate for North Polk against Jacobsen. Jacobsen had a whopping 15 strikeouts and no walks for the Tigers.
Gabbie Glenn was 2-for-4 with a run, two steals and a pair of RBI for ADM on offense. Ashley Tennant went 2-for-2 with a double and RBI.

ALLEMAN — A no-hitter from Bailey Hougham and five extra-base hits on offense enabled North Polk to roll past Nevada, 10-0, in six innings Friday at Alleman.
Hougham only issued one walk and she struck out two in her outstanding hitless performance. She was backed by a Comet offense that put up 11 hits as North Polk improved to 7-2 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.
North Polk scored the first two runs of the game in the third inning. The Comets added four runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and another in the sixth to end the game on account of the 10-run rule.
Rebecca Rimathe homered and doubled and she had two runs and RBI apiece for North Polk on offense. Ellie Owen was 3-for-4 with a run and three RBI and Carolyn Steffen smacked a solo home run and finished with two runs.
Paige Sandberg was 2-for-2 with a double and a run; Audrey Ley doubled, scored and drove in a run; Maddy Hill was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Becca Ley finished 1-for-2. Hougham and Trisha Sporra each walked once and drove in a run, Cali Capaldo scored twice and stole a base and Emily Patterson added one run and steal apiece.
Mackenzie Garrett gave up seven earned runs on 11 hits with three walks in 5 ? innings to take the loss for Nevada. Riley Mailey drew a walk for the Cubs.

GILBERT — A huge start helped North Polk easily overcome one rough inning to pound Gilbert by a 13-5 score June 15 at Gilbert.
The Comets scored five runs in the first inning and increased their lead to 8-0 through three frames. Gilbert came up with five runs in the bottom of the fourth, but Comet pitcher Sophie Swygman blanked the Tigers the rest of the way and the North Polk offense put up five unanswered runs over the last two innings.
Swygman gave up five hits and one walk and she struck out three in seven innings to get the victory. Rebecca Rimathe came up big on offense as she homered, doubled, scored twice and drove in a run.
Ellie Owen was 2-for-4 with a walk, steal and two runs; Audrey Ley finished 2-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece and Paige Sandberg ended up 2-for-4 with two RBI, one run and one steal for the Comets. Maddy Hill went 1-for-5 with two runs, Carolyn Steffen doubled, walked twice, stole a base and delivered two runs and RBI apiece and Alexis Davis was 1-for-3 with three steals and one walk, run and RBI apiece.
Cali Capaldo went 1-for-2 with a steal and a run; Trisha Sporra drove in two runs; Becca Ley walked, scored and swiped two bases and Emily Patterson tacked on a run and a steal for North Polk.
Ibby Culek was 3-for-4 with a run and Tate Powers finished 2-for-4 with a run for Gilbert. Kamryn Miller was the losing Tiger pitcher as she surrendered six earned runs with seven walks and three strikeouts in seven innings.
