Bombers go 3-1 at Kiwanis Invite

ROLAND — The Ballard softball team had a successful two days at the Kiwanis Invitational last Thursday and Saturday in Roland.

The Bombers went 3-1 over their two days of competition. They scored decisive wins over Gilbert, Nevada and South Hamilton, and lost a competitive game with a Mount Pleasant team rated No. 11 in 4A.

Ballard opened the Kiwanis Invitational with a 9-2 victory over Gilbert. The Bombers scored at least one run in each of the first six innings to build a nine-run lead before Gilbert could get on the board.

Meredith Ossian went 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI for Ballard in the win. Olivia Hall was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI; Karlee Ahrenholtz doubled, scored and drove in two runs and Kate Rietz was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI.

Jenna Moody was 1-for-4 with a run and RBI apiece, Sydne Struve finished 1-for-4 with a steal and a run and Rachel Newell was 1-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece. Kennedy Newell also scored one run for the Bombers.

Danielle Mallas got the win versus Gilbert. Mallas gave up two earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and no walks in seven innings.

Riley Nelson allowed three runs on four hits with one strikeout in two innings to take the loss for Gilbert. Tate Powers was 2-for-4 with two RBI at the plate for the Tigers.

Ballard pounded out 17 hits in a 14-4 victory over Nevada in six innings during its second game on Thursday.

Moody and Skylar Rigby hit back-to-back home runs for Ballard versus Nevada. Moody finished 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBI and Rigby was 2-for-3 with two runs, four RBI and a steal.

Kennedy Newell was a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs and two steals against the Cubs. Hall went 2-for-4 with two runs and RBI apiece, Ahrenholtz was 2-for-3 with two RBI and Rachel Newell was 2-for-4 with a steal and a run.

Struve and Katie Sydnes each ended up 1-for-4 with one run and RBI apiece in the win over Nevada.

Hannah Elliott was the victorious pitcher for Ballard against Nevada. Elliott allowed four runs - three earned - on five hits with four strikeouts and no walks in four innings.

Isabell Hobbs threw two scoreless and hitless innings with one strikeout and two walks in relief for Ballard against Nevada.

Mackenzie Garrett allowed 11 earned runs with two walks over 5 ? innings to take the loss for Nevada. Grace Francis doubled, scored and drove in two runs, Ellie Burlage was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI and Elizabeth Wessels went 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Cubs.

On Saturday, Ballard pulled off a 14-4 victory over South Hamilton in five innings. A nine-run third inning keyed the Bomber win.

Kennedy Newell was 3-for-4 with three runs, an RBI and a steal; Hall went 1-for-2 with four RBI and Moody was 1-for-3 with three runs, a walk and a steal for the Bombers versus the Hawks. Rigby ended up 1-for-2 with a walk, run and two RBI; Struve scored once and drove in a run, Rachel Newell walked and scored two times apiece and Meredith Ossian finished 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI.

Kiersten McKinney scored one run, Ahrenholtz went 1-for-2 with a walk and Sydnes and Rietz each scored one run.

Mallas picked up another victory on the mound versus South Hamilton. She allowed three earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts and no walks in five innings.

Ady Wintermote gave up nine earned runs with five walks over four innings to take the loss for South Hamilton. Alyssa Hegland was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and two steals; Ronnie Olson doubled and drove in two runs and Wintermote was 2-for-3 with a double, run, steal and RBI for the Hawks.

Ballard also suffered an 8-5 loss to the hands of a strong Mount Pleasant team on Saturday. The Bombers took a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning and then Mount Pleasant plated five runs to take charge the rest of the way.

Struve went 3-for-4 with a double and a run; Hall was 2-for-4 with a double, run and RBI and Rachel Newell was 2-for-3 with a run for Ballard against Mount Pleasant. Kennedy Newell and Moody both finished 2-for-4, Sydnes was 1-for-2 with a run, Ossian ended up 1-for-4 and Rigby walked and scored.

Elliott allowed seven runs - just three earned - on seven hits with two strikeouts and four walks in five innings to take the loss against Mount Pleasant. Hobbs gave up one run on one hit and walk apiece in one inning of work.

Ballard concluded the Kiwanis Invitational with an 11-13 overall record.

HUXLEY — Ballard couldn’t withstand a sluggish start in a 10-2 non-conference loss to Class 5A rival Ames Friday at Huxley.

The Bombers found themselves in a 5-0 hole after two innings. Ballard found some life in the bottom of the fourth inning with two runs, but Ames came right back with two runs of its own in the top of the fifth and added three runs in the sixth to pull away.

Sydne Struve was 2-for-3 with a double and a run for Ballard in the loss. Olivia Hall, Rachel Newell and Karlee Ahrenholtz each hit one double, Skylar Rigby singled and scored and Katie Sydnes also had a single for the Bombers.

Kennedy Newell added a walk and a steal for Ballard. Hannah Elliott was the losing pitcher as she gave up four runs - two earned - on four hits in one inning.

Danielle Mallas allowed five runs - four earned - on nine hits with one strikeout and no walks in 4 ? innings for the Bombers. Isabell Hobbs surrendered one unearned run on one hit and walk apiece with one strikeout in 1 ? innings.

Macee Buss finished with five strikeouts and one walk in seven innings to get the win for Ames. Savannah Perry led the Little Cyclones at the plate by going 2-for-4 with a double, home run, two runs and two RBI.

DALLAS CENTER — Ballard couldn’t quite hang on against Dallas Center-Grimes in a 4-3 non-conference loss to the Fillies in eight innings June 15 at Dallas Center.

Ballard led 3-1 going into the bottom of the sixth inning after scoring one run apiece in the first, third and sixth frames. But DCG tied the score in the bottom of the sixth, and after neither team got on the board in the seventh, the game went into extra innings.

DCG kept Ballard scoreless in the top of the eighth and then scored a run in the bottom of the inning to win the game.

Hannah Elliott gave up four earned runs on 12 hits with four strikeouts and three walks, going all eight innings to take the loss for Ballard. Olivia Hall was 2-for-2 with two steals and an RBI, Rachel Newell finished 2-for-3 with two runs and Jenna Moody was 2-for-5 with a double and RBI for Ballard.

Kennedy Newell added a walk and a run, Sydne Struve drew one walk and Skylar Rigby knocked in a run for the Bombers.

Allie Boender allowed three runs and she struck out 14 and walked four over seven innings to get the win for DCG. Rachel Lowary was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI and Madison Carpenter finished 3-for-4 with a run for the Fillies.
