NEVADA — Three consecutive strong offensive innings enabled Ballard to blow past non-conference rival Nevada by a 12-0 score in five innings June 14 at Billy Sunday Field in Nevada.

Ballard put at least three runs on the board in each of the first three innings to completely take charge. The Bombers did one better each inning, putting up three runs in the first, four in the second and five in the third.

Austin Edwards provided the biggest stick for Ballard on the evening. He smacked two-run home runs in successive at-bats - the first going over the gap in left-center field and the second a monster pull shot to left field.

“I got two fastballs right over the middle - right where I like ‘em,” Edwards said. “I just tried to put a good swing on them and they went over. Got them in the first two innings so it got us ahead really earlier.”

Edwards drew a bases-loaded walk in his third and final at-bat to finish with five RBI.

“At that point I was just ‘go for a base hit,’” Edwards said. “I was going for a base hit, but ended up getting walked.”

Kobe Schulze was 2-for-2 with a double, single, walk and three runs and Jonny Luster was 1-for-1 with a walk, two steals, two runs and three RBI. Noah Rosing was 2-for-2 with two runs, steals and RBI apiece; Marcus Chieves was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run; Isaac Schafbuch singled, walked, scored and stole two bases and Jack Luster added a single.

Ballard ended up with 10 hits as a team. The Bombers’ other key contributors were Kai Reinertson, who walked and drove in a run and Nick Fopma, who scored once.

“These guys are starting to believe in each other more than anybody I’ve seen,” said Ballard head baseball coach Nick Steenhagen. “These guys are really starting to enjoy being around each other and they’re starting to trust whoever’s on the mound, whatever the batting order is. Tonight we went with a little bit different lineup and they still took care of business. They’re just really starting to gel so it’s been fun to watch.”

Jack Luster got the win on the mound. The freshman gave up just four hits and he tallied four strikeouts and two walks.

“That’s his second varsity appearance and second varsity win,” Steenhagen said. “He’s a guy we’re looking forward to in the future, but we’re just trying to get him some quality innings this year - especially with the defense we’ve been able to put together. We’re comfortable with anybody on the mound.”

Brady Schomocker gave up three runs on two hits with two walks in ? of an inning to take the loss for Nevada. Bennett Thompson doubled, Jack Higgins, Chris Dobernecker and Thomas Crawford singled and Macade Matuska drew a walk for the Cubs.
