COLLINS — Collins-Maxwell-Baxter didn’t come out with much spunk versus Saydel in a battle of unbeaten Heart of Iowa Conference teams Friday in Collins and the end result was a 4-0 loss at the hands of the Eagles.

Taylor Tague blasted a solo home run for Saydel off Raider pitcher Abbey Kahler in the second inning and from that moment on, the Eagles had an energy level CMB was unable to match, suffering its first conference setback.

“We swung the bats very uncharacteristic of what we’ve done so far this year and it showed that we were really tight,” CMB head coach Troy Houge said. “We weren’t loose. We were riding this game a lot that two undefeated teams in the conference are coming in here and I think the girls put a little too much onto that and were too worried about it instead of just coming and playing their game.”

Tague followed up her monster home run in the second inning with a two-run single in the fourth to give Saydel a 3-0 lead. CMB showed some life in the bottom of the inning as Holly Jessen and Veronica Condon each singled to put runners on first and second with two outs, but Eagle pitcher Jade Olsen forced Jordynn Wesselink to fly out to short to end the inning.

Saydel went up 4-0 in the top of the fifth.

Katie Camp hit a two-out double in the bottom of the fifth for CMB, but Abbey Kahler was caught looking on a 3-2 pitch for the final out of the inning. Wesselink hit a one-out single in the seventh, but two groundouts followed to end the game.

“We shouldn’t have been shut out,” Houge said. “Not to take anything away (from them) - their pitcher did exactly what she needed to do - but we’ve seen better pitching and hit it hard. But (Saydel) has a good defensive team and they make plays; they made them when they had to and that’s what it comes down to. It’s a learning experience.”

Kahler gave up four earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts and no walks in a losing effort. Olsen struck out two and walked one, tossing a four-hit shutout to get the win.

Tague was 2-for-3 with three RBI, Destiny Butters was 1-for-3 with a double and a run and Carissa Boley also drove in a run for the Eagles.
