Comets top Hawks in HOIC battle
ALLEMAN - A rough second inning proved costly for North Polk in a 13-3 loss to Class 4A power Urbandale June 9 in Alleman.
The Comets had a great first inning, taking a 1-0 lead after Becca Ley walked, stole second and scored on a bunt by Rebecca Rimathe in the bottom of the inning. But in the second, the wheels fell off as Urbandale exploded for eight runs.
“There were hitting the ball in the gap, so there’s not much we can do there,” North Polk head coach Lynnette Foster said. “We just need to play in, be ready to hit the ball and come back.”
Ashlan Burton hit a two-run double and Ashley Pearson added a two-run single for Urbandale in the top of the second. Mylea Cole, Skyler Shellmyer, Mykaela Cole and Allison Yoder each singled in a run for the Jayhawks during the inning.
Urbandale added another run in the third. But North Polk showed some fight with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to pull within 9-3.
Rimathe hit a leadoff double and scored on a sacrifice fly from Maddy Hill for North Polk’s first run of the fourth. Audrey Ley walked, took second on a single by Paige Sandberg and then scored on a double from Carolyn Steffen.
The Comets almost got another run in the fourth, but Sandberg was tagged out at home on Steffen’s hit.
“They worked hard and they competed every inning,” Foster said. “They’re making themselves better for down the road during regionals. One inning at a time, one pitch at a time.”
Urbandale plated three more runs in the top of the seventh to seal the deal.
Foster was able to get several players involved in the game. The Comets had four players pick up one hit and a total of 14 saw the field.
“I have some players leaving in a week; I needed to put other players in to get them more comfortable and it was a good time to do it,” Foster said.
Audrey and Becca Ley are both leaving for a mission’s trip and will return before the last week of the regular season. North Polk was also without catcher Trisha Sporra.
Becca and Audrey both ended up with a walk and a run apiece and Rimathe was 1-for-2 with one run and RBI apiece. Ellie Owen went 1-for-2, Steffen was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Sandberg was 1-for-3.
Hill also finished with one RBI.
Olivia Patterson was the losing Comet pitcher. She gave up eight runs on seven hits with two walks in two innings. Sophie Swygman allowed two earned runs on six hits with no walks in five innings.
Jessica Walljasper struck out four and walked two in seven innings to earn the win for Urbandale. Shellmyer, Cole, Burton and Pearson each drove in two runs for the Jayhawks.
