Comets struggle at Norwalk

NORWALK — The North Polk baseball team had a sloppy night in the field and a tough night at the plate in an 11-1 non-conference loss to Norwalk in five innings June 9 at Norwalk.

The Comets committed five errors and only delivered four hits, falling to 5-4 on the season.

The game was tied at 1-1 after 2 ½ innings. Norwalk then plated five runs in the bottom of the third and added another five unanswered scores in the fifth to end the game on account of the 10-run rule.

Garrett Houge gave up four runs - one earned - on five hits with one walk in 2 ? innings to take the loss on the mound. Matt Cox allowed five runs - three earned - on two hits with three walks in 1 ? innings and Anthony Capaldo gave up two runs on three hits with two walks for the Comets.

Cox and Brett Haun each doubled and Cox also scored North Polk’s only run. Nate Johnson was 1-for-2 with an RBI, Ben Rupe singled and Houge drew a walk.

Caleb Black gave up one earned run on four hits with one walk for Norwalk. Ryan Kennedy went 3-for-4 with one run and RBI apiece and Devin Pirkle was 2-for-4 with a double, run and two RBI for the Warriors.

JEWELL — Strong relief pitching from Ben Rupe and a quality start on offense gave North Polk a 5-2 Heart of Iowa Conference victory over South Hamilton June 8 at Jewell.

Rupe entered the game in the third inning and held South Hamilton without a run and to just one hit over five innings to get the victory. He struck out seven batters and walked only one.

North Polk led 3-2 after three innings. The Comets added two runs in the fourth, then let Rupe and the defense do the rest as they improved to 3-2 in the HOIC.

Matt Cox was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI and Brett Haun and Garrett Houge each tallied a single and an RBI for North Polk. Ryan Spaulding, Colby Cupp and Nate Johnson each singled and scored a run, Matthew Antle tacked on a single and Luke Leopold walked twice and drove in a run.

Haun gave up two runs - one earned - on three hits with two walks and one strikeout in two innings as the starting pitcher for North Polk. Trey Woodall took the loss for South Hamilton after allowing four earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and walks apiece in seven innings.
