Bombers top Perry for second RRC win

ADEL — The Ballard softball team went 0-4 against a murderers’ row of competition at the Tiger Invitational Friday and Saturday in Adel.

The Bombers fell to an Adel-Desoto-Minburn team rated No. 1 in Class 4A, a Van Meter squad rated No. 9 in 2A, a 4A power in Ankeny Centennial and a solid Colfax-Mingo squad over the two days to drop to 8-10 on the season. The Bombers were competitive in three of the four contests, losing two games by one run and another by two.

On Friday Ballard was dealt a 5-0 setback by ADM and suffered a 4-3 loss against Ankeny Centennial.

ADM pitcher Molly Jacobsen completely overwhelmed Ballard. Jacobsen threw a perfect game with 17 strikeouts.

ADM scored a run in the first, three in the sixth and one in the seventh. Danielle Mallas took the loss after giving up one run on two hits with two walks and one strikeout in one inning and Makenna Randolph allowed four runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and walks apiece in six innings.

Ballard had a big first inning, but then went cold the rest of the way in the loss to Ankeny Centennial in six innings.

The Bombers went up 3-1 after the first frame. But they were kept off the scoreboard the rest of the way, finishing with just four hits.

Ballard maintained its lead until the top of the sixth, when the Jaguars put two runs on the board to go in front to stay.

Jenna Moody was 2-for-3 with a run and Skylar Rigby singled twice to account for all of Ballard’s hits. Karlee Ahrenholtz walked, stole a base and scored, Sydne Struve scored once, Piper Johnson walked once and Lesli Carney picked up a steal for Ballard in the loss.

Randolph took the loss after giving up two runs on one hit with two walks and one strikeout in one inning. Hannah Elliott allowed two runs on three hits with four strikeouts and one walk in five innings.

Kayla Stone threw 5 ? scoreless innings in relief to get the win for Ankeny Centennial. She gave up three hits and struck out six with no walks.

Kendyl Lindaman homered; Chloe Olson doubled, scored and drove in a run and Haley Gatica knocked in two runs for Ankeny Centennial.

On Saturday Ballard suffered a 4-2 loss to Colfax-Mingo and another 4-3 setback against Van Meter.

The Bombers were tied at 2-2 with Colfax-Mingo through four-and-a-half innings. Colfax-Mingo plated both of its runs in the first inning and Ballard scored once in the first and added another run in the fifth.

In the bottom of the fifth, Colfax-Mingo scored two more times to take the lead. Tigerhawk pitcher Amy Russell then kept Ballard off the board over the final two innings to give her team the win.

Olivia Hall doubled and drove in a run, Moody singled and scored, Struve singled and walked and Randolph added a single versus Colfax-Mingo. Elliott gave up two earned runs on seven hits with one strikeout and no walks over six innings on the mound for Ballard.

Russell had eight strikeouts and one walk in seven innings for Colfax-Mingo. She also went 2-for-3 with two runs at the plate.

Ballard gave up three runs in the bottom of the fifth in a 4-3 loss to Van Meter in six innings during its other game on Saturday.

The Bombers plated two runs in the first and one in the fifth. The Bulldogs scored once in the first to go along with their fifth-inning outburst.

Rigby doubled and scored, Hall was 2-for-3 with a double and Rachel Newell added a single for Ballard versus Van Meter. Moody and Kennedy Newell each scored once for the Bombers.

Elliott gave up three runs on six hits with two strikeouts and four walks in 4 ? innings to take the loss versus Van Meter. Randolph threw ? of a scoreless inning in relief.

Meagan Blomgren went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI for Van Meter. Bailey Harding was the winning Bulldog pitcher after giving up two earned runs on four hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

HUXLEY — A seventh-inning rally gave Ballard a 3-2 Raccoon River Conference victory over Perry June 9 in Huxley.

The Bombers trailed 2-1 going into the bottom of the seventh, then scored two runs to improve to 2-2 in the RRC. Olivia Hall stepped up with two doubles and a pair of RBI to lead Ballard to victory.

Kennedy Newell was 2-for-4 with one run; Jenna Moody doubled, walked and scored and Sydne Struve and Katie Sydnes each had a single for Ballard. Lesli Carney scored a run, Meredith Ossian picked up an RBI and Karlee Ahrenholtz and Skylar Rigby each walked once.

Hannah Elliott gave up one earned run on three hits with three strikeouts and one walk in five innings for Ballard on the mound. Danielle Mallas allowed one run on four hits with one strikeout in 1 ? innings and Makenna Randolph tossed ? of a scoreless inning to get the win.

HUXLEY — Ballard couldn’t handle No. 2 Winterset June 8 in Huxley as the Bombers gave up 18 hits in a 10-2 loss to the Huskies.

Winterset jumped out to a 5-0 lead through 2 ½ innings. Ballard came back with two runs in the bottom of the third, but Winterset pitcher Regan Thompson closed out the game with four shutout innings to drop the Bombers to 6-7 overall and 1-2 in the Raccoon River Conference.

Katie Sydnes doubled and scored, Skylar Rigby was 2-for-3, Jenna Moody and Kennedy Newell each had one single and Kiersten McKinney scored a run on offense for Ballard. Danielle Mallas gave up 10 earned runs on 16 hits with one walk in 6 ? innings to take the loss.

Makenna Randolph threw ? of an inning and didn’t allow a run on two hits.

Thompson finished with three strikeouts and no walks in seven innings to get the win for Winterset. She was backed by an offense that pounded out eight extra-base hits.

Briley Tryon doubled, homered and drove in one run; Ally Pickering was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI; Macy Johnson went 3-for-4 with a double, run and two RBI and Natalie Hansen knocked in three runs for Winterset.

HUXLEY — A solid comeback fell a little short for Ballard against Boone in Raccoon River Conference play June 7 in Huxley as the Bombers suffered a 6-4 setback at the hands of the Toreadors.

Ballard fell behind 6-0 going into the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Bombers plated a run in the fifth, then shut out Boone in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, eighth-grader Skylar Rigby smashed her first-career home run - a three-run shot - to get Ballard back in the game.

Bomber pitcher Makenna Randolph kept Boone off the board in the top of the seventh, but Ballard couldn’t respond in the bottom of the inning to end up two runs short.

Rigby went 2-for-3 with three RBI and Olivia Hall was 2-for-3 with a run for Ballard. Sydne Struve finished 2-for-4, Jenna Moody singled and drove in a run, Katie Sydnes singled and stole a base and Kiersten McKinney scored once for the Bombers.

Breanna Hunter gave up four runs - one earned - with five strikeouts and no walks in seven innings to pick up the victory for Boone. Kennedy Hilsabeck homered and drove in three runs, Jaiden Huseman hit a solo home run and Stefanie Davis was 3-for-3 with a double and a run for Boone on offense.
