Comets handle Mustangs, Rams

ALLEMAN - The North Polk baseball team earned its second victory in as many days with a 6-3 non-conference win over East Marshall Tuesday at Alleman.

North Polk took a 4-0 lead after one inning and made it stick. The Comets added two insurance runs in the fourth on their way to improving to 4-3 on the season.

Ben Rupe was 2-for-4 with a double, run and RBI; Max Karpinske was 2-for-3 with a run and a steal and Brett Haun doubled, scored and knocked in two runs for North Polk.

Matt Cox went 1-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece, Dawson Deitch was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Colby Cupp added a single for North Polk.

Colten Parkins was the winning Comet pitcher. Parkins gave up three runs - two earned - on five hits with seven strikeouts and just one walk in five innings.

Rupe gave up one hit and struck out three in two scoreless innings of relief to get the save.

Parker Angstman allowed six runs on eight hits with one walk and two strikeouts in 5 ? innings to take the loss for East Marshall. Jordan McAnulty was 1-for-3 with a run at the plate for the Mustangs.

ALLEMAN - Timely hitting lifted North Polk to an 8-2 Heart of Iowa Conference victory over Greene County Monday at Alleman.

The Comets outhit Greene County 10-8 and they had three extra-base hits to none for the Rams. North Polk plated three runs in the first inning and built an 8-0 lead through four frames, coasting to victory to snap a three-game losing streak and improve to 2-2 in the HOIC.

Ben Rupe went 3-for-3 with a triple and three runs and Luke Leopold was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI for North Polk on offense. Matt Cox tripled and scored, Colby Cupp was 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI and Brett Haun went 1-for-4 with two runs.

Cupp was the winning pitcher. He went the distance and allowed two earned runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts and five walks.

Tyler Beger gave up eight runs - four earned - on seven hits with two strikeouts and walks apiece in three innings to take the loss for Greene County. Reid Lamoreux was 2-for-4 with a run on offense for the Rams.

URBANDALE - North Polk fell apart late in a 10-0 loss to Urbandale in five innings Friday at Urbandale.

The Comets only trailed 1-0 through three innings. But Urbandale put six runs on the board in the fourth and then slammed the door on North Polk early with a three-run fifth to end the game on account of the 10-run rule.

North Polk finished with just three hits and the Comets were hurt by four errors. Luke Leopold, Colby Cupp and Garrett Houge each singled once and Max Karpinske also drew a walk for the Comets.

Brett Haun took the loss on the mound after allowing seven runs - just two earned - on seven hits with two strikeouts and no walks in four innings. Karpinske gave up three earned runs on four hits with three walks in ? of an inning.

Carter Troncin struck out three and walked one in five innings to earn the win for Urbandale. Ross Kramper went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI at the plate for the Jayhawks.

MONROE - North Polk came up short against Prairie City-Monroe in eight innings June 2 at Monroe, suffering a 4-3 setback at the hands of the Mustangs.

North Polk trailed 1-0 through six innings of play. In the top of the seventh, the Comets went in front as Ben Rupe hit a two-run triple and Max Karpinske drove Rupe in with a single.

But PCM came right back to tie the score in the bottom of the seventh to force an extra inning. An error and a wild pitch led to the two Mustang runs in the seventh.

The Comets were retired in order in the top of the eighth. In the bottom of the inning, Ryan Hill hit a bases-loaded single to win the game for PCM.

North Polk was hurt by five errors in the game. PCM went mistake-free in the field.

Brett Haun took the loss in relief for North Polk. He gave up one run on one hit with three walks in ? of an inning.

Colten Parkins allowed three unearned runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and three walks in seven innings as the starting pitcher for North Polk.

Rupe was 1-for-3 with two RBI, Karpinske went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Luke Leopold singled and scored and Matthew Antle also had a hit for North Polk.

Austin Brown threw all eight innings for PCM. He struck out six, walked three and allowed three earned runs to get the win.

DES MOINES - North Polk struggled in all phases against No. 8 Saydel in a 10-0 loss to the Eagles in five innings June 1 at Des Moines.

The Comets only had two hits and they committed four errors on the night. Saydel finished with seven hits, including three doubles.

Saydel jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one inning. North Polk trailed 6-0 after three frames and then gave up two runs apiece over the next two innings as the game ended on account of the 10-run rule.

Luke Leopold had a double and Dawson Deitch singled for the lone Comet hits. Max Karpinske, Garrett Houge and Colby Cupp each drew a walk.

Cupp was the losing pitcher. He gave up eight runs - only two earned - on six hits with seven strikeouts and two walks in four innings.

Houge gave up two runs on one hit with two walks in ? of an inning.

Rece Martin struck out five and walked three in five innings to get the win for Saydel. Devin Porter went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI; Joe Boehler drove in four runs and Joe Seuferer was 1-for-3 with a walk, three runs and two RBI for the Eagles.
