Comet bats get hot in wins over B-F, GC

BONDURANT - The North Polk softball team earned its fourth win in five games with a 10-3 road win over Bondurant-Farrar Tuesday at Bondurant.

The Comets overcame an early 2-0 deficit with a run in the second and three more in the fourth. They went up 6-1 after six innings, then finished off the Bluejays with four runs in the seventh to improve to 8-4 overall and 3-2 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

North Polk pounded out 15 hits in the win. Audrey Ley went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs and Paige Sandberg was 3-for-4 with two runs and RBI apiece to pace the Comets at the plate.

Trisha Sporra finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, Becca Ley was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Alexis Davis went 2-for-2 with an RBI for the Comets. Carolyn Steffen was 1-for-3 with one run and two RBI; Maddy Hill finished 1-for-2 with a double, run and RBI and Rebecca Rimathe hit a triple for the Comets.

Bailey Hougham was the winning pitcher. She allowed three runs - one earned - on eight hits with four strikeouts and walks apiece.

Hope Holzworth gave up nine earned runs with one strikeout and walk apiece in seven innings to take the loss for Bondurant-Farrar. Isla Ekstam doubled and scored two runs for the Bluejays.

JEFFERSON - A stunning performance at the plate enabled North Polk to outlast Greene County in a 17-8 Heart of Iowa Conference slugfest Monday in Jefferson.

The Comets connected for an amazing 24 hits against the Rams. They came up especially big in the sixth inning - scoring an incredible 10 runs to take charge and never look back.

North Polk led 6-5 going into the sixth. Greene County scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth and another in the seventh, but it wasn’t nearly enough to overcome the Comets’ amazing outburst.

Five different players collected at least three hits for North Polk. The Comets also had five players drive in two runs in a well-rounded attack.

Cali Capaldo went 5-for-6 with a double, steal, two runs and an RBI and Paige Sandberg was 4-for-5 with two doubles, three runs and two RBI to lead the Comet offensive onslaught. Becca Ley finished 4-for-6 with one run and two steals, Audrey Ley was 3-for-5 with two runs and RBI apiece and Carolyn Steffen finished 3-for-5 with a home run, two walks and two runs and RBI apiece.

Rebecca Rimathe finished 2-for-6 with a walk, steal and three runs and Ellie Owen was 2-for-5 with a walk, two runs and a pair of RBI for the Comets. Trisha Sporra finished 1-for-5 with a run and two RBI.

Sophie Swygman got the win for North Polk. She allowed seven earned runs on 16 hits with 11 strikeouts and two walks, going the full seven innings. Hannah Promes gave up 14 runs with four walks and two strikeouts in 5 ? innings to take the loss for Greene County.

Promes went 4-for-4 and Carleigh Paup was 4-for-5 with two doubles, a triple, two runs and two RBI for the Rams on offense.

ALLEMAN - The North Polk softball team went 2-1 at the Comet Invitational Friday and Saturday in Alleman.

The Comets defeated Des Moines Christian and Des Moines Roosevelt on Friday.

North Polk handed Des Moines Christian a 10-5 loss in five innings. The Comets broke a 3-3 tie with a huge seven-run outburst in the fourth inning.

Becca Ley was 2-for-2 with two walks, a steal and three runs and Rebecca Rimathe went 2-for-4 with a steal, run and three RBI to pace North Polk on offense versus the Lions. Ellie Owen was 1-for-3 with a run and two RBI; Sophie Swygman doubled, walked twice and drove in two runs and Paige Sandberg was 1-for-1 with a walk and a run.

Swygman gave up three runs - one earned - on two hits with three walks and two strikeouts in four innings to pick up the win on the mound. Bailey Hougham allowed two runs - one earned - on three hits with one walk in one inning.

Brooke Mumford took the loss for Des Moines Christian. She gave up 10 earned runs with 12 walks and one strikeout.

Jennifer Reed paced Des Moines Christian on offense by going 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI.

North Polk pulled off a 5-4 victory over Roosevelt. The Comets fell behind 4-2 after four innings, then plated three runs in the fifth and held on for the win.

Sophie Swygman threw three scoreless and hitless innings with one strikeout in relief to get the win versus Roosevelt. Patterson gave up two earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and two walks in 3 ? innings.

Carolyn Steffen was 3-for-3 with a double and RBI, Rebecca Rimathe went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, Paige Sandberg went 2-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece and Becca Ley finished 2-for-4 with one walk and one run to pace the Comets offensively. Ellie Owen ended up 1-for-4 with a run, Audrey Ley was 1-for-4 with an RBI, Alexis Davis went 1-for-3 with a run and Cali Capaldo was 1-for-3 with a walk.

On Saturday, a Norwalk team rated No. 11 in Class 4A proved to be too much for North Polk. The Warriors handed the Comets an 11-0 setback in five innings.

North Polk was held without a hit in the loss. Olivia Patterson took the defeat after giving up three runs with three walks and Swygman allowed eight runs - six earned - on 11 hits with two walks and a strikeout in five innings.

Alyx Witt struck out five in getting the no-hitter to earn the win for Norwalk. Miranda Hughes was 3-for-3 with a double, run and four RBI, and Taylor Goode ended up 3-for-3 with a double and three runs and RBI apiece for Norwalk on offense.

ALLEMAN - North Polk couldn’t quite rally past Prairie City-Monroe, suffering a 4-3 loss to the Mustangs June 2 at Alleman.

The Comets fell behind 4-0 after four innings. They shut out the Mustangs over the final three innings and scored twice in the fifth to make a game of it, but their seventh-inning comeback attempt fell just short after putting up one run in the bottom of the inning.

Sophie Swygman took the loss. She gave up four unearned runs on 11 hits with nine strikeouts and no walks in seven innings.

Rebecca Rimathe, Audrey Ley, Maddy Hill and Carolyn Steffen each collected two hits on offense for North Polk in the loss. Rimathe was 1-for-4 with a run; Ley doubled twice and drove in a run; Hill was 2-for-3 with a double, walk and RBI and Hill finished 2-for-3 with a double.

Becca Ley doubled and scored and Alexis Davis singled for the other Comet hits.

Kayla Jennings struck out nine and walked two, going the distance to get the win for PCM. Jaiden Rodgers and Jayci Vos were both 2-for-4 with a run and Abby Waddell went 1-for-4 with a double and two runs for the Mustangs on offense.

ALLEMAN - North Polk sputtered offensively over the final five innings in a 4-2 loss to Saydel June 1 at Alleman.

The Comets scored a run in each of the first two innings, but went scoreless the rest of the way to suffer their first Heart of Iowa Conference loss.

Rebecca Rimathe was 3-for-3 with a solo home run and a double for North Polk. Paige Sandberg was 1-for-3 with an RBI, Becca Ley had a double and Audrey Ley and Alexis Davis each singled once for North Polk.

Olivia Patterson took the loss after giving up four runs - two earned - on five hits with two strikeouts and no walks in four innings. Sophie Swygman gave up two hits in three scoreless innings of work.
