Bombers fall to No. 4 Cubs in regional final
NEVADA - Ballard didn’t have an answer for No. 4 Nevada in the Class 1A regional finals Monday at the SCORE Athletic Complex in Nevada.
The Bombers fell behind less than three minutes into the game and never gained their footing in a 10-0 loss.
Nevada led 5-0 at the half. The Cubs scored twice in the opening five minutes of the second half, and added three more goals to end the game with eight minutes, 50 seconds left, due to the 10-goal mercy rule.
Kati Cassabaum had four goals and two assists for Nevada. Hattie Rhodes, Erin Sellberg and Abby Stephenson added two goals apiece for Nevada.
With the loss, Ballard ended the season at 7-8.
HUXLEY - Ballard broke out of a funk at the right time with a 4-0 victory over Knoxville in the Class 1A regional semifinals Friday at Rich Strouse Field in Huxley.
The Bombers fired off 21 shots on goal and only gave up four, snapping a five-game losing streak to improve to 7-7 and advance to play No. 4 Nevada in the regional finals.
Rachel Watters stepped up with two goals and one assist for Ballard in the win. Sydney Smith and Sydney Halverson netted one goal apiece for the Bombers.
Watters had seven shots on goal, Steph Knittel tallied four and Smith and Jennie Huxford each finished with three. Jill Vanersvelde chipped in two shots on goal and Halverson and Cassie Smith tacked on one apiece.
Keeper Sierra Knight made five saves to help Ballard deliver its fourth shutout of the season. Tori Dye, Sarah Holtby, Kenzie Allen and Amber VanderVeer each had one shot for Knoxville as the Panthers ended the season at at 7-11.
