Bomber bats explode in sweep at Story City

BONDURANT - A strong hitting night lifted the Ballard baseball team to its third win in a row with a 6-4 triumph over Bondurant-Farrar Monday in Bondurant.

Ballard pounded out 13 hits on the night. Pitcher Austin Edwards held Bondurant-Farrar to six hits and the Bombers only committed one error, improving to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the Raccoon River Conference.

The Bombers scored twice in both the first and third innings to take a 4-1 lead. Bondurant-Farrar pulled within 4-3 after scoring once in the third and fourth frames, but Ballard answered with another run in the top of the fifth.

Bondurant-Farrar came back with a run in the bottom of the fifth to pull back within one. The score stayed that way until the top of the seventh, when Ballard put one more score on the board.

Edwards shut down Bondurant-Farrar in the bottom of the seventh to wrap up his team’s first RRC victory.

Edwards gave up three earned runs on six hits with 10 strikeouts and four walks, going the full seven innings to get the win.

On offense Jonny Luster continued his hot start to the season by going 3-for-4 with a double, steal, two runs and two RBI. Marcus Chieves was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs, Brooks Fleischmann was 2-for-3 and Lane Shaeffer went 2-for-4 for Ballard on offense.

Kobe Schulze finished 1-for-4 with one run and steal apiece, Taylor Roberts was 1-for-4 with two RBI and Edwards and Clayton Poots each singled once for Ballard on offense.

Brandon Johnson went the distance and took the loss for Bondurant-Farrar. He tallied six strikeouts and no walks.

Jarrid Clark, Payton Duit and Will Hoyle each hit a solo home run for Bondurant-Farrar. Clark finished 2-for-4 with two runs, and Casey Zarr and Tanner Bedier each added a hit for the Bluejays.

STORY CITY - The bats came alive for Ballard at the Roland-Story Invitational Saturday in Story City as the Bombers combined for 29 runs in wins over Gilbert and Webster City.

Ballard edged Gilbert in a 10-9 battle, then pummeled Webster City by a 19-1 score to improve to 5-2 on the season.

In the victory over Gilbert, the Bombers scored the winning run in the sixth inning. The Bombers rallied from a 7-4 deficit with a five-run fifth to knot the score at 9-9 after the inning to set up their go-ahead score in the sixth.

Lane Shaeffer was the winning pitcher for Ballard against Gilbert. He threw two scoreless innings with two walks and one strikeout.

Taylor Roberts gave up six runs on three hits with six walks and three strikeouts in 3 ? innings. Colin Anderson threw ? of a scoreless inning, giving up two hits, and Gannon Manfull gave up two runs on two hits with three walks in one inning of work.

Johnny Luster led Ballard’s 10-hit attack on offense with a historic three-home run game. Luster drove in four runs and scored three.

Shaffer also homered and drove in two runs and Austin Edwards belted a solo home run for Ballard. Kobe Schulze doubled, scored, walked and drove in a run and Marcus Chieves doubled, scored and knocked in a run for the Bombers.

Roberts singled, stole a base and scored. Manfull doubled and drove in a run and Brooks Fleischman was 1-for-3 with a run.

An awesome second inning helped Ballard blow past Webster City in an impressive rout. The Bombers busted out for 12 runs in the inning and added five more in the third, ending the game after four innings due to the 15-run mercy rule.

Luster also had a monster game against Webster City with the stick. He went 3-for-4 with three doubles and drove in an impressive seven runs.

Chieves finished 2-for-2 with a double, walk, three runs and an RBI and Schulze ended up 1-for-3 with a walk and three runs. Edwards went 1-for-1 with two walks, a steal and two runs; Roberts was 1-for-1 with a walk, run, steal and RBI and Clayton Poots doubled and walked

Shaeffer finished 1-for-2 with one run and RBI apiece, Max Shelton finished 1-for-1 with one run and RBI apiece and Nick Fopma tripled and drove in a run for the Bombers.

Freshman Jack Luster was the winning pitcher for Ballard versus Webster City. Jack gave up one earned run on three hits with three strikeouts and walks apiece in four innings.

SLATER - Ballard couldn’t stop Carlisle from gradually pulling away June 3 at Nite Hawk Field in Slater as the Bombers gave up at least one run in each of the first six innings in a 10-4 loss.

Carlisle pounded out 13 hits, including seven doubles. The Bombers couldn’t keep pace with just seven hits and one extra-base knock, starting 0-1 in Raccoon River Conference play.

Marcus Chieves tripled and drove in two runs, Jonny Luster knocked in a run and both Kobe Schulze and Brooks Fleischmann were 1-for-3 with a run for the Bombers. Taylor Roberts and Gannon Manfull both ended up 2-for-3, Noah Rosing scored one run and Austin Edwards and Clayton Poots each walked once for the Bombers.

Kai Reinertson gave up eight runs - seven earned - on 11 hits with two strikeouts and one walk in 4 ? innings to take the loss for Ballard. Roberts gave up two runs on one hit with two walks in one inning and Colin Anderson allowed one hit with one strikeout in a scoreless ? of an inning.

Nat Mortimer was 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI and Anthony Hanson finished 2-for-4 with two doubles, one run and two RBI for Carlisle. Nic McCay was the winning pitcher after giving up four runs - three earned - with four strikeouts and two walks in five innings.

URBANDALE - Great pitching and defense wasn’t enough for Ballard in a 2-0 loss at 4A power Urbandale June 2.

Bomber pitchers Austin Edwards and Colin Anderson combined to hold Urbandale to six hits. The Bluejays scored their only runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Edwards took the loss after giving up two earned runs on six hits with four walks and three strikeouts in 5 ? innings. Anderson didn’t allow a run or a hit and he walked one batter in ? of an inning.

The Bombers fell because they could only muster two hits on offense. Gannon Manfull doubled, Kobe Schulze singled and Jonny Luster walked once for Ballard.

Michael Van Riessen was 1-for-3 with a run, Keegan Perez and Cody Pearson both singled and drove in a run and Caleb Kistenmacher also scored once for Urbandale. Brady Roberts threw 1 ? scoreless innings with three strikeouts and no walks in relief to get the win for the Bluejays.
