Comets go 2-0 at Sully

SULLY — North Polk took first place and a short-handed Ballard team split two games at the Lynnville-Sully softball team tournament Saturday in Sully.

The Comets defeated Ballard by an 11-1 score in five innings and they downed Lynnville-Sully by a 4-2 score to improve to 4-1 on the season. Ballard - playing without its senior class due to graduation - knocked off Lynnville-Sully by a 6-3 score to get off to a 1-1 start on the season.

North Polk took a 2-0 lead after two innings against Ballard. The Comets then put up five runs in the third and four in the fifth to break the game open.

Rebecca Rimathe went 3-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI and Audrey Ley was 2-for-4 with two doubles, one run and three RBI to pace North Polk’s 13-hit attack against Ballard. Cali Capaldo finished 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs, Paige Sandberg was 2-for-3 with one run and two RBI and Becca Ley finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI.

Alexis Davis was 1-for-3 with a double, run and RBI for the Comets. Bailey Hougham was the winning pitcher after giving up one unearned run on three hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

Hannah Elliott took the loss for Ballard. She allowed five earned runs with four strikeouts and no walks, going the full five innings.

Piper Johnson doubled, and Jenna Moody and Kate Rietz each had a single for Ballard versus North Polk. Moody also stole one base, Rachel Newell drew one walk, Sarah Stolte picked up one steal and Kiersten McKinney scored the lone Bomber run.

North Polk also took down Lynnville-Sully in a shortened five-inning affair. The Comets took a 2-1 lead after one inning, Lynnville-Sully tied the score in the third and North Polk plated two runs in the fourth.

Audrey Ley was 3-for-3 with a double, Rimathe went 1-for-2 with one run and RBI apiece and Olivia Patterson was 1-for-2 with an RBI for the Comets versus the Hawks. Maddy Hill added a single; Carolyn Steffen walked twice, scored and drove in a run and Becca Ley and Ellie Owen each scored once for North Polk.

Sophie Swygman was the winning pitcher for North Polk versus Lynnville-Sully. She threw two scoreless innings and gave up three hits with five strikeouts and no walks.

Patterson got the start against Lynnville-Sully. She allowed two earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts and one walk in three innings.

Carson Fisk took the loss for Lynnville-Sully. She gave up two earned runs with three walks and one strikeout in five innings.

Makenzy Rozendaal was 3-for-3 with an RBI to pace the Hawks on offense against the Comets.

Ballard jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings, then scored four runs in the fifth in its victory over Lynnville-Sully. The Hawks scored all three of their runs in the fourth inning.

Moody went 2-for-3 with a double, home run, two runs and two RBI for Ballard in its victory over Lynnville-Sully. McKinney was 2-for-2 with two runs and one steal, Newell was 1-for-3 with one steal and RBI apiece, Katie Sydnes was 1-for-2 with a steal, Skylar Rigby went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Johnson added a single against the Hawks.

Danielle Mallas was the winning pitcher for Ballard. Mallas gave up one earned run on five hits with three walks and one strikeout going the full five innings.

McKinley Conover took the loss in relief for Lynnville-Sully against the Bombers. She allowed five runs with one strikeout and walk apiece in three innings.

Shelby Foster went 2-for-2 with a run for the Hawks offensively versus Ballard.
