Comets get past Cubs in eight

NEVADA — The North Polk softball team bounced back from a tough road loss at Perry to edge Nevada, 6-5, in eight innings during a Heart of Iowa Conference game May 27 at Nevada.

The Comets took a 5-4 lead after 5 ½ innings, only to see Nevada tie the score with a run in the bottom of the sixth. After neither team could score in the seventh, the game went into extra innings.

The Comets were able to take the lead with a run in the top of the eighth. Relief pitcher Sophie Swygman then shut Nevada down in the bottom of the eighth to wrap up the victory and put North Polk at 2-0 in the HOIC and 2-1 on the season.

Swygman gave up one run on three hits with four strikeouts and one walk in four innings. Olivia Patterson got the start for North Polk, allowing four runs - two earned - on five hits with two strikeouts and one walk in four innings.

Cali Capaldo was 2-for-5 with a double, run and two steals and Alexis Davis was 2-for-3 with a run for North Polk on offense.

Rebecca Rimathe was 1-for-5 with an RBI; Becca Ley went 1-for-4 with a double, run and RBI; Carolyn Steffen was 1-for-4; Audrey Ley went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Maddy Hill was 1-for-4 with one run and RBI apiece for the Comets. Paige Sandberg went 1-for-4 with an RBI, Swygman was 1-for-1, Ellie Owen was 1-for-1 with an RBI and Emily Patterson stole a base and scored.

Mackenzie Garrett went the distance for Nevada in a losing effort. She struck out three batters on the night.

Madi Highland was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run and Elizabeth Wessels finished 2-for-4 for with a walk for Nevada on offense. Garrett also singled and scored, Peyton Messerli walked and scored twice and Megan Anderson also crossed the plate once for Nevada.

PERRY — The momentum from a good start quickly evaporated for North Polk in a 12-1 non-conference loss at Perry in five innings May 24.

The Comets took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. They maintained that edge until the bottom of the third, when the Bluejays erupted for eight runs to break the game open.

Perry added four more unanswered runs in the fifth to end the game early on account of the 10-run rule.

Bailey Hougham gave up five runs - four earned - on one hit with four walks in 2 ? innings to take the loss for North Polk. Olivia Patterson allowed seven runs - five earned - on five hits with five walks and two strikeouts in two innings.

Rebecca Rimathe smacked a solo home run to account for the lone Comet score of the game. Becca Ley singled and stole a base and Audrey Ley and Patterson each singled once.

Emma Olejniczak gave up one run on four hits with seven strikeouts and no walks in five innings to get the win for Perry. Johanna Diw was 4-for-4 with a home run, steal, two runs and four RBI for the Bluejays on offense.

ALLEMAN — North Polk opened the season with a decisive 8-1 victory over Heart of Iowa Conference rival Roland-Story May 23 at Alleman.

The Comets jumped out to a 4-0 lead after scoring one run in the second and three more in the third. Roland-Story plated a run in the top of the fourth, but North Polk answered with four more in the bottom of the inning to put the game away.

Rebecca Rimathe went 2-for-3 with a double, walk, two runs and an RBI and Maddy Hill was 2-for-4 with one run and two RBI for North Polk. Cali Capaldo finished 2-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece, Becca Ley was 1-for-4 with two runs and Audrey Ley finished 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Olivia Patterson added one single, Paige Sandberg walked once and Emily Patterson and Ali McClain each scored a run for North Polk.

Sophie Swygman was the winning pitcher. She gave up no runs or hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 3 ? innings of relief.

Olivia Patterson allowed one run on two hits with three walks and one strikeout in 3 ? innings for the Comets.

Sydney Mathis allowed eight runs - two earned - on nine hits with two strikeouts and walks apiece in six innings for Roland-Story. Hailey Louw was 2-for4, with a double and a run for the Norse at the plate.
