CMB hammers Greene County

JEFFERSON — The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter baseball team kept up its hot play to start the season against Greene County Friday in Jefferson as the Raiders handed the Rams an 11-2 drubbing.

CMB took charge with a five-run third inning. The Raiders slammed the door on Greene County with back-to-back three-run innings in the sixth and seventh frames as they improved to 3-0 both overall and in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

All nine players got a hit for CMB in the win. The Raiders tallied 12 hits - including two doubles - and drew seven walks on offense.

Brad Ritter went 2-for-4 with a double, walk and three RBI and Brady Kemp was 2-for-5 with a double, two runs and two RBI as the top hitters for CMB. Creighton Caple went 1-for-2 with two walks, three runs, one steal and one RBI; Brady Stover was 1-for-4 with a walk and two runs and Nate Bishop ended up 2-for-4 with one run and RBI apiece.

Tucker Maxwell added a single, walk and RBI and Spencer Gauch was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run. Aric Broderick and Hunter McWhirter both collected one hit and RBI apiece and McWhirter also drew a walk.

Kemp earned the victory on the mound after giving up two unearned runs on three hits with two strikeouts and one walk in four innings. Maxwell allowed no runs on two hits with two strikeouts and one walk in three innings of relief.

Branden Miller gave up five runs on one hit with five walks in two innings to take the loss for Greene County. Wade Adcock drove in two runs and Reid Lamoreux was 2-for-3 with a double, steal and run for the Rams on offense.

COLLINS — An overpowering performance from pitcher Brady Stover lifted Collins-Maxwell-Baxter to a 6-1 victory over Nevada in its home opener May 25 in Collins.

Stover struck out an incredible 17 batters to earn the victory. Nevada put a run on the board in the first inning, then had no answer for Stover the rest of the way.

Stover ended up allowing just three hits. He also issued only three walks on the night.

On offense CMB had six hits. Brad Ritter was 2-for-3 with two RBI, Aric Broderick went 2-for-3 with one run, Spencer Gauch was 1-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece and Stover finished 1-for-4 with a steal and a run.

Creighton Caple walked and scored and Brady Kemp walked two times and crossed the plate once for CMB. Brady Ross also walked twice and he scored one run.

Preston Cattanach gave up five earned runs on five hits with three walks and one strikeout in 3 ? innings to take the loss for Nevada. Cam Shill was 1-for-3 with a run and Jack Higgins ended up 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Cubs at the plate.

GILBERT — Collins-Maxwell-Baxter scored four unanswered runs over the final three innings to pull off a 5-4 comeback win over defending Heart of Iowa Conference champion Gilbert to open the season May 23 at Gilbert.

CMB trailed 4-1 going into the fifth inning. The Raiders jumped out to a 1-0 lead after one inning, but Gilbert came up with four runs in the bottom of the third.

In the top of the fifth CMB plated three runs to tie the score. After holding Gilbert scoreless in the bottom of the inning, the Raiders put up a run in the top of the sixth to go in front.

CMB pitcher Nate Bishop shut down Gilbert over the final two innings to preserve the victory. Bishop gave up four runs - just one earned - on nine hits with eight strikeouts and three walks in seven innings to pick up the win on the mound.

Brad Ritter went 2-for-3 with one double, a walk and two RBI and Brady Kemp was 3-for-4 with a double, run and RBI to lead CMB on offense. Creighton Caple was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs; Brady Stover went 1-for-3 with a walk, steal and run apiece and Brady Ross ended up 1-for-3 with a run.

Tucker Maxwell also walked and drove in a run for CMB.

Steven Lawrence went 3-for-4 with a run and Skyler Popillion was 2-for-4 with two doubles, one run and one RBI for Gilbert on offense. Garrison Holck gave up one run on three hits with three strikeouts and no walks in three innings of relief to take the loss for the Tigers.
