Bomber baseball team starts 3-0

SLATER — The Ballard baseball team used two huge innings to dismantle Madrid, 16-1, in four innings Friday at Nite Hawk Field in Slater.

The Bombers broke open a tight game with a five-run outburst in the third inning. Then they exploded for nine runs in the fourth to put the Tigers to bed early and remain perfect on the season at 3-0.

Austin Edwards went 4-for-4 with a double, three runs and six RBI to pace Ballard’s explosive 14-hit attack. Jonny Luster was 2-for-2 with two walks, a double, steal and four RBI; Taylor Roberts finished 2-for-2 with a double, two runs and four RBI and Kobe Schulze was 2-for-4 with a double, run and two RBI.

Gannon Manfull went 1-for-3 with a double, two runs and RBI, Brooks Fleischmann was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Clayton Poots ended up 1-for-3. Isaac Schafbuch added a single and an RBI and Lane Shaeffer and Nick Fopma each scored a run.

Colin Anderson was the winning pitcher. He gave up one earned run on two hits with four strikeouts and two walks in four innings.

Wyatt Smith gave up seven earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and one walk in 2 ? innings to take the loss for Madrid. Bryce Dean was 2-for-2 with a double, three steals and a run for the Tigers.

OGDEN — Strong pitching and steady offense over the first six innings gave Ballard a 6-2 road win at Ogden May 25.

Bomber pitcher Gannon Manfull tossed a five-hitter with 10 strikeouts and just two walks. He kept Ogden off the scoreboard until the seventh inning when the game had been decided.

Ballard took charge with a three-run fourth inning to build a 4-0 lead. They added two insurance runs in the sixth and Ogden was only able to shave a small portion from its deficit with two runs in the seventh.

Ballard totaled 10 hits on offense. The Bombers connected for three doubles and they also had four steals.

Marcus Chieves, Johnny Luster and Clayton Poots each collected two hits. Chieves went 2-for-4, Luster was 2-for-3 with a walk, steal and run and Poots went 2-for-3.

Kobe Schulze ended up 1-for-4 with a double and a run; Austin Edwards was 1-for-4 with a double, run and RBI and Lane Shaeffer finished 1-for-2 with a double and a run. Brooks Fleischmann added a single, Noah Rosing walked, scored and stole two bases and Nick Fopma stole a base and scored.

Carter Church gave up six runs - two earned - on seven hits in 5 ? innings to take the loss for Ogden. Jaden Bell was 2-for-3 with two RBI for the Bulldogs.

GRIMES — Strong pitching and timely hitting gave Ballard a 5-2 victory over Dallas Center-Grimes to open the season May 24 at Grimes.

The Bombers held the Mustangs to two hits. The Bomber offense only had four hits, but they added six steals and four walks to make the most of their opportunities on offense.

Ballard took a 2-1 lead after the second inning. The Bombers went up by two runs with a run in the fourth, then they added two more unanswered scores in the sixth.

DCG plated its only other run of the game in the seventh as Austin Edwards finished off the Mustangs to pick up the save.

Edwards gave up one earned run on one hit with three strikeouts and two walks in two innings of relief. Kai Reinertson threw five strong innings to get the victory as he allowed just one unearned run on one hit with seven strikeouts and one walk.

Jonny Luster was 1-for-1 with two walks, four steals, three runs and an RBI for Ballard in the win. Austin Edwards doubled, scored and drove in a run; Lane Shaeffer and Taylor Roberts both had one hit and RBI apiece and Marcus Chieves walked, stole a base and scored for the Bombers.
