Comet boys fall to Glenwood in 1A substate

RED OAK - The North Polk boys’ tennis team saw its season come to a close with a 5-1 loss to Glenwood in the 1A substate round Saturday at Red Oak.

State qualifier Nathan Greiner picked up North Polk’s lone victory in the No. 1 singles match. Greiner swept Glenwood’s Sam Lauritsen in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-2.

In the No. 1 doubles match, Greiner and Dustin Murray suffered a competitive loss to Lauritsen and Alex Chekal. The Comet team suffered a 7-6 loss in the opening set - losing the tiebreaker by a 7-5 score - then a 6-2 setback in the second set.

North Polk’s Colby Cupp and Glenwood’s Sean Harper were unable to end the No. 5 singles match before the meet was decided. Cupp won the first set by a 7-5 score, lost the second by a 6-3 margin and then he and Harper were engaged in a 1-1 tie before the meet was called after the No. 1 doubles match.

Greiner will compete in the 1A state singles tournament this Friday and Saturday at at Byrne’s Park in Waterloo. Greiner placed third in 1A at last year’s state meet.

Adam Konfrst (G) defeated Ben Lehman (NP); 6-0, 6-0. 6. Ethan Thompson (G) defeated Jack Veber (NP), 6-0, 7-5.

Doubles: 1. Lauritsen and Chekal (G) defeated Greiner and Murray (NP); 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.
