Ballard’s Jurgensen qualifies for state in girls’ tennis

NORWALK - The Ballard girls’ tennis team saw its season come to a close with a 5-3 loss to Creston in the Class 1A state first round Monday at Norwalk.

The Bombers were unable to recover from losing the first four singles matches. The meet ended after Creston secured the win with a victory in the No. 1 doubles match.

Emi Bendler and Bry Ronca each scored a victory for Ballard in singles play.

Bendler defeated Creston’s Gracie Russell in No. 5 singles match. Bendler won the first set, 6-2, suffered a 6-4 loss in the second, then won the super-tiebreaker in a 10-8 battle.

Ronca won a competitive battle with Ann Weigand in the No. 6 singles match. Ronca opened with a 6-3, suffered a 6-0 loss in the second set and claimed a 10-4 victory in the super-tiebreaker.

Emily Jurgensen and Nicole Kling teamed to win the No. 2 doubles match for Ballard.

Jurgensen and Kling defeated Caitlin McIlravy and Sydney Dunphy in three sets. The Bomber team claimed a 6-2 victory in the first set, suffered a 6-4 loss in the second and then pulled off a 10-5 win in the super-tiebreaker.

With the loss, Ballard ended the season at 13-2.

Singles: 1. Jenna Taylor (C) defeated Emily Jurgensen (B); 6-4, 6-0. 2. Alli Thomsen (C) defeated Meredith Ossian (B); 6-1, 6-1. 3. Caitlin Mcllravy (C) defeated Olivia Astarita (B); 6-3, 6-3. 4. Sydney Dunphy (C) defeated Nicole Kling (B); 7-6 (4), 7-5. 5. Emi Bendler (B) defeated Gracie Russell (C); 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (8). 6. Bry Ronca (B) defeated Ann Weigand (C), 6-3, 0-6, 1-0.

Doubles: 1. Taylor and Thomsen (C) defeated Ossian and Astarita (B); 6-3, 7-5. 2. Jurgensen and Kling (B) defeated McIlravy and Dunphy (C); 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (5).

NORWALK - Ballard’s Emily Jurgensen qualified for state for the second-straight season in girls’ tennis after winning the singles championship at the Class 1A singles and doubles tournament in Norwalk May 19.

Jurgensen won the championship by sweeping Saydel’s Melanie Gustafson in the championship match by scores of 6-2 and 6-0. Nicole Kling also competed for Ballard and she came up short against Gustafson in the semifinals, then lost the third-place match to Gracie Russell of Creston.

In doubles play, both Ballard teams of Meredith Ossian and Olivia Astarita and Emi Bendler and Bry Ronca came up short in the semifinals.

Ossian and Astarita lost in the semifinals to Sydney Dunphy and Caitlin McIlravy of Creston. Bendler and Ronca came up short against the eventual championship team of Jenna Taylor and Alli Thomsen from Creston.

The Bomber losses pitted the two Ballard teams against each other in the third-place match. Ossian and Astarita prevailed.

The 1A state girls’ tennis meet takes place June 2-4 at Byrnes Park in Waterloo.
