Raider girls win qualifying meet title

VAN METER - The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter girls’ track team brought home a team championship and the Raider boys made it to state in four events at the Class 2A state qualifying meet in Van Meter May 12.

The CMB girls won three events and took second four times at Van Meter. The Raiders scored 123 points to beat out Madrid by 8.5 points for the team championship.

When the at-large state qualifiers were determined on Friday, CMB ended up making it in nine events, including two individuals in the long jump.

“I’m so proud of our accomplishments tonight,” CMB head girls’ track coach Jerry Meinerts said. “We always talk about ‘leaving it on the track’. Our girls did that tonight. To win regionals is a huge accomplishment - this is only the second time in CMB history that has happened.”

Seniors Toni Spencer and Bridget Hurley set the pace for CMB. Spencer qualified for state in all four of her events and Hurley made it in three.

Spencer won the long jump to qualify automatically and she qualified on time in the 100-meter dash after placing fourth. Hurley qualified automatically in the open 400 for the fourth year in a row.

In the long jump Spencer peaked with an outstanding jump of 17 feet, 1.5 inches to just miss the school record. Her jump barely edged out the 17-0.25 by Prairie City-Monroe’s Ashley VanGorp for first at Van Meter, and it ranks second overall among all 2A qualifiers.

In the 100 dash Spencer placed fourth in Van Meter with a time of 13.19 seconds. But her time was easily fast enough to make the at-large qualifiers, ranking 13th out of 24 qualifiers.

Hurley is headed back to state in the 400 after running a 1:02.70. Her time trailed only the outstanding :57.33 run by Des Moines Christian’s Okasana Covey at Van Meter and it ranks 18th among 2A qualifiers.

Both Spencer and Hurley were part of CMB’s automatic state qualifying relay teams in the sprint medley and 4 X 100.

The Raiders sprint medley team of Megan Ritter, Shatsa Moody, Spencer and Hurley took first at Van Meter in 1:55.63. They won an exciting race with PCM for first, just edging out the Mustang team’s time of 1:55.65.

In the 4 X 100, Sailor Hinegardner and Brianda Bane joined Spencer and Hurley in running a time of :51.45. That came in just behind Madrid’s :51.33 showing at Madrid and ranks an impressive fifth overall among 2A qualifiers.

Hinegardner and Bane also came up big at Van Meter. In addition to the 4 X 100 Hinegardner made state in the 100 hurdles and long jump and Bane qualified in the 400 hurdles.

Hinegardner’s best jump in the long jump was 16-3. That placed fourth at Van Meter, but put her 16th overall among 2A qualifiers.

In the 100 hurdles, Hinegardner clocked in at :16.62 to place third at Van Meter. Her time is rated 20th among 2A qualifiers.

Bane qualified automatically in the 400 hurdles after taking second at Van Meter with a 1:12.14 showing. That puts her 24th among 2A qualifiers and came in behind only the 1:06.12 run by PCM’s Jayci Vos at Van Meter.

Payge Jurgens and Heather Jessen were CMB’s other automatic qualifiers.

Jurgens won the shot put with a throw of 34-9.5. Jessen took second in the 3,000 with a time of 11:56.69.

Josie Wierson, Brenna Thomson and CMB’s shuttle hurdle team of Gracie Cheville, Sydney Ziesman, Mary Schabilion and Hinegardner just missed making state.

Wierson came in just behind Bane’s final qualifying time in the 400 hurdles as she clocked in at 1:12.18 to place third at Van Meter. Thomson took third in the 3,000, finishing a tad behind Jessen with a 12:01.22 showing and the Raider shuttle hurdle team clocked in at 1:12.27 to place third behind Madrid’s 1:10.88.

The CMB boys’ track team qualified for state in four events, including two individuals in the shot put. As a team, the Raider boys scored 59 points to place sixth out of 13 teams at Van Meter.

“Going into the meet we knew it’d be a tough (qualifying meet),” CMB head coach Josh Russell said. “I’m really happy with the events that got through. We got all the events except for maybe one or two that we thought we really had a shot at.”

Brady Stover was part of all three Raider running events that qualified for state. Stover qualified individually in the 100 dash and 400 low hurdles and he was also part of the Raider shuttle hurdle relay team that advanced.

“I’m happy for Brady,” Russell said. “It’s a really nice feather in his cap for the season he has had.”

Stover automatically qualified in the 400 low hurdles with a runner-up time of :56.17. His time ranks 13th among 2A qualifiers.

In the 100 dash Stover qualified on time after placing fourth at Van Meter with an :11.63 showing. That puts him 19th among 2A qualifiers.

Stover anchored the CMB boys’ shuttle hurdle team to a third-place time of 1:02.35 at Van Meter. Ben Gunderson, Lane Howes and Brad Ritter ran the first three legs as CMB came in 23rd among 2A qualifiers.

Will Clapper and Brady Kemp were CMB’s other state qualifiers. Both made it to state as at-large selections in the shot put.

Clapper took third at Van Meter with a throw of 47-11.5 and Kemp placed fourth with a toss of 47-6.5.

Clapper’s throw is rated 18th and he is the only freshman qualifier in 2A. Kemp’s throw is ranked 21st among 2A qualifiers.
