Ballard tops St. Edmond in 1A substate prelims

BOONE — The Ballard boys’ tennis team won its Class 1A preliminary substate meet with Fort Dodge St. Edmond by a 5-2 score Saturday at McHose Park in Boone.

The Bombers reached the preliminary substate meet after placing second at the 1A district meet in Fort Dodge two days earlier. The victory over St. Edmond put Ballard at 6-5 on the season and the Bombers will play LeMars for the right to go to state this Saturday in Fort Dodge.

In the victory over St. Edmond, Ballard went 4-2 in singles play and then won the No. 3 doubles match to end the meet.

Max Olsan and Ryan Carson earned the victory for Ballard in the No. 3 doubles match. They defeated St. Edmond’s Sam Blair and Tyler McCarville in straight sets, 6-1 and 7-5, to sew up the victory before the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles matches could be completed.

In singles play Ballard won four matches.

Brody Echer downed St. Edmond’s Trent Woodhouse in straight sets, 7-6 and 6-2, in the No. 2 match and Olsan swept McCarville with a pair of 6-0 shutouts in the No. 4 match.

David DeTar won the No. 5 match over St. Edmond’s Nick Doyle with two 6-1 victories. Carson gave Ballard a win in the No. 6 match as he downed Blair with two 6-2 wins.

FORT DODGE — Ballard earned a trip to the preliminary substate round and the Bombers sent one doubles team on to state at the Class 1A district meet in Fort Dodge.

Ballard produced the runner-up doubles team and a fourth-place singles qualifier. That put the Bombers in second place behind Clear Lake with 17 points, allowing the team to move on to the 1A substate preliminary round.

Mark Mosher and Brody Echer entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed in doubles play and they lived up to their ranking by coming in runner-up with a 2-1 record. The runner-up finish qualified Mosher and Echer for the state singles and doubles tournament in Waterloo, starting Friday, May 27.

Mosher and Echer received an opening-round bye, then they swept Fort Dodge St. Edmond’s Nelson Cook and Nick Doyle by scores of 6-0 and 6-3. In the semifinals, Mosher and Echer downed a team from Hampton-Dumont, 6-2 and 6-4.

That put Mosher and Echer up against Clear Lake’s Ben Mason and Jacob Peterson in the finals. Mason and Peterson won by scores of 6-3 and 6-1.

Darrian Ward and David DeTar also competed in the doubles tournament for Ballard. They went 2-2 and placed fourth.

Ward and DeTar bested St. Edmond’s team of Tyler McCarville and Sam Blair by scores of 6-2 and 6-1 in the first round, then pulled off another 6-2, 6-1 win over Webster City’s Steffen Chambers and Colton Gemmel.

In the third round, Mason and Peterson downed Ward and DeTar by scores of 6-0 and 6-3. A Hampton-Dumont team then handed Ward and DeTar 6-0 and 6-4 losses in the fourth round.

Ryan Carson and Max Olsan both participated in the singles tournament for Ballard. Carson was 1-1 and Olsan ended up 0-1.

Carson defeated Webster City’s Sean Godfredson by 6-2 and 6-1 scores. He then lost by 7-5 and 6-3 scores to St. Edmond’s Trent Woodhouse.

Olsan suffered a pair of 7-6 losses at the hands of Clear Lake’s Nick Holtz. Olsan dropped the first super-tiebreaker by a 10-1 score and the second by a 10-6 margin.

Final team scores: 1. Clear Lake 22 points, 2. Ballard 17, 3. Fort Dodge St. Edmond 11, 4. Iowa Falls-Alden 9, 5. Webster City 8, 6. Hampton-Dumont 6, 7. South Hardin 2.

HUXLEY — Ballard ended the regular season with a 7-4 victory over Saydel May 10 at Huxley.

The Bombers won four singles and three doubles matches to even their season record at 5-5.

In singles play Ballard won the Nos. 3-6 matches. Darrian Ward, Max Olsan, David DeTar and Ryan Carson were all victorious for the Bombers.

Ward won the No. 3 match over Saydel’s Andrew Smith with two 6-1 victories. In the No. 4 match Olsan took care of Peter Walkwitz with decisive 6-1, 6-0 wins.

DeTar pulled off the No. 5 match over Saydel’s Zach Bobenhouse by scores of 6-4 and 6-3. Carson won the No. 6 match over Collin Van Der Sluis with 6-3 and 6-1 victories.

In doubles play Ward and DeTar won the No. 2 match over Dalton Silver and Walkwitz. The Bomber team opened with a 7-5 victory, dropped a 7-6 decision and then pulled off a 10-6 win in the super-tiebreaker.

Olsan and Carson won the No. 3 match over Bobenhouse and Mikel Nuzum. The Bomber team swept by scores of 6-3 and 6-2.

Caleb Hamerlinck and Zach Begg took the No. 5 doubles match for Ballard. They ousted Alex Candon and Bryce Campbell in straight sets, 6-3 and 7-6.
