No. 9 Comets edge No. 10 Cardinals at Newton

NEWTON — The North Polk girls’ soccer team scored a huge non-conference 3-2 win over Newton in a battle between two top-10 teams Friday at Newton.

The Comets, ranked No. 9 in Class 1A, downed the No. 10 team in 2A to improve to 10-1 on the season. North Polk overcame 22 shots on goal by Newton to hand the Cardinals (7-2) just their second loss of the season.

Sawyer Elwell had a tremendous game at keeper and the Comet defense provided her with outstanding support to overcome Newton’s barrage on offense.

Joy Smith scored two goals and Hannah Becker added the other for North Polk. Courtney Bonewitz delivered one assist for the Comets.

Kari Adams and Ryanne Rausch each scored one goal for Newton. Rausch also had one assist.

KNOXVILLE — North Polk made short work of Knoxville May 2 at Knoxville as the Comets blanked the Panthers by a 9-0 score.

Five different players scored for North Polk and five players also came up with an assist for the Comets.

Joy Smith led the way with four goals and one assists. Hannah Becker added two goals and one assist, Katie Berglund delivered one goal and three assists and Courtney Bonewitz came away with one goal and two assists for North Polk.

Katryn Halterman also scored one goal and Ali Teig came through with an assist for the Comets. Sawyer Elwell was excellent at keeper, helping North Polk achieve its eighth shutout of the season.
