GILBERT — The North Polk boys’ track team gutted out some tough performances to edge past Gilbert for the team championship at the Heart of Iowa Conference meet May 3 in Gilbert.

North Polk used a strong showing in field events to take charge and then did just enough to hold off Gilbert for the team win. The Comets scored 116 points and Gilbert finished second with 113 points.

“It was a close one and we knew it would be,” North Polk head coach Bill Capaldo said. “Our guys really fought hard and showed some grit on a night when we weren’t our best as a whole. Goes to show how much of a team effort this championship really was.”

Field events played a big part in the victory. North Polk picked up three gold medals on the field.

Connor Jackson won the discus for North Polk with a throw of 134 feet, 5 inches. South Hamilton’s Logan Klemp came in second with a throw of 133-2.

In the high jump Grant Rampton won after clearing 6-2. He nearly cleared 6-8, just nipping the bar with the back of his heels on his final jump.

Max Karpinske gave North Polk the win in the long jump. He had an outstanding jump of 21-6.5 to beat Gilbert’s Ryan Blum by a comfortable 10.5 inches for the gold.

“Our field events were fantastic,” Capaldo said.

On the track North Polk won the 4 X 800-meter and distance medley relay events.

In the 4 X 800 Brandon Albaugh, Flint Vernon, Wes Lesher and Austin Smith teamed to run a time of eight minutes, 24.56 seconds. South Hamilton took second in 8:31.37.

Karpinske, Anthony Capaldo, Albaugh and Brett Haun teamed to win the distance medley in 3:48.25. That time was just enough to edge South Hamilton’s 3:48.59 for the gold.

Smith also took first individually in the 800. His time of 2:08.34 just held off the 2:09.04 by Gilbert’s Keegan Sturdy, and Lesher took third in the race with a 2:09.42 showing.

In the 4 X 200 Reid Summers, Grant Croat, Karpinske and Matt Cox teamed to run a 1:34.65 and take second behind the 1:33.86 run by Nevada.

North Polk’s shuttle hurdle team of Rampton, Beau Dodge, Sully Hartsook and Quinton Sommers won a bronze in 1:04.52. The Comet 4 X 400 team of Croat, Capaldo, Haun and Albaugh took fourth in 3:36.20 to clinch the team victory for North Polk.

“That 4 X 400 really worked hard as we knew we had to get fourth at worst to win the meet,” Coach Capaldo said.

Collins-Maxwell-Baxter came in fifth out of nine teams with 69 points. The Raiders earned one victory and three runner-up performances on the evening.

Will Clapper and Brady Kemp took first and second in the shot put for CMB. Clapper won with a throw of 49-9.25 and Kemp’s runner-up toss was 48-4.

Hunter Gunderson came in third in the high jump for North Polk. He cleared 5-10.

Brady Stover, Joe Keeling, Lane Howes and Ben Gunderson gave CMB a runner-up time of 1:03.47 in the shuttle hurdle. Gilbert won in 1:02.26.

Stover added a runner-up time of :56.91 in the 400 low hurdles. Greene County’s Daric Whipple took the gold in :55.85.
