Kohut-Jackson places fifth at Drake
Ballard’s Abby Kohut-Jackson placed fifth in the girls’ 1,500-meter run at the Drake Relays Saturday in Des Moines.
Kohut-Jackson ran an outstanding time of four minutes, 40.72 seconds. She beat out all other non-4A runners in the race, with the winning time of 4:32.02 coming from Linn-Mar’s Stephanie Jenks.
“Abby ran a controlled and smart race,” Ballard girls’ track coach Scott Barth said. “She started out comfortably and moved up in place throughout the race. Every runner in the top five is seniors and have signed with Division 1 programs. (Abby) will do well at the University of Minnesota.”
Other area athletes that competed at Drake last Thursday through Saturday were Grant Rampton, Max Karpinske, Ben Rupe, Matt Cox and Reid Summers from the North Polk boys’ track team and Brady Stover from CMB.
Rampton placed 13th in the boys’ high jump after attempting a jump of six feet, three inches. Karpinske came in 22nd in the boys’ long jump with a jump of 19-9.25 and Stover placed 29th in the boys’ 100 dash prelims with an :11.62 showing.
The Comet 4 X 100 team of Rupe, Cox, Karpinske and Summers was disqualified for going out of the exchange zone on a handoff.
