Four Raiders named all-HOIC in baseball

Four members members of the Collins-Maxwell-Baxter baseball team received all-Heart of Iowa Conference recognition in 2015.

Senior Seth Balke, junior Brady Stover and sophomores Hunter McWhirter and Tucker Maxwell were all honored after helping CMB improve slightly in conference play. The Raiders were 6-10 in the conference after going 5-11 a year ago.

Balke and Stover were selected to the all-HOIC second team. They were joined by: Gilbert pitcher Wes Greder and infielder Jacob Adams; Prairie City-Monroe catcher Jerod DeVries; Saydel catcher Joe Boehler; Greene County infielder Jordan Hostetler and outfielder Tyler Beger; Roland-Story infielder Alex Muhlenberg; North Polk outfielder Blake Brauer and utility picks Brett Haun and Matt Antle; Nevada outfielder Traye Pelzer and South Hamilton outfielder Blake Barquist.

Balke hit .383 with a .442 on-base average, .426 slugging average, two doubles, five runs, six steals and four RBI in conference play. He also made 30 assists and 10 putouts with only two errors in the field and went 2-4 with a 3.74 earned-run average, 32 strikeouts and only five walks in 33 ? innings on the mound.

Stover posted a 3-2 record with a whopping 67 strikeouts against only 16 walks and a sparkling 1.58 ERA in 31 innings versus conference foes. He also hit .231 with one double, one home run, seven runs and seven steals.

McWhirter and Maxwell were both named all-HOIC honorable mention.

McWhirter hit .234 with six runs in conference play. He also threw out three runners and had 94 putouts, 10 assists and only one error, playing most of his time in the field at catcher.

Maxwell had a .229 OBA with one home run, four runs and five RBI in HOIC games. He went 0-1 with a 2.80 ERA and three strikeouts in five innings on the mound and delivered 10 putouts, one assist and only one error in the field.

The all-HOIC first team was made up of: Gilbert pitcher Evan Johnson, catcher Zach Paul, infielder Jared Gescheidler, outfielder Nick Day and utility pick Dax Hatfield; Greene County pitcher Riah Nelson, catcher Jordan Challen and outfielder Daric Whipple; Saydel infielders Devin Porter and Joe Seuferer and utility pick Rece Martin; Roland-Story infielder Tyler Hovick and PCM outfielder Clay Cooper. Gescheidler and Day were the only unanimous choices to the first team.
