Raiders rip Mustangs in district opener

BLOOMFIELD - Dominance in all three areas of play helped the Collins-Maxwell-Baxter football team easily dispose of Davis County in its Class 2A District 7 opener Friday in Bloomfield.

CMB outgained Davis County 389-227 in total yards and the Raiders also received four field goals from Joey Nissen in a 40-12 victory that kept them undefeated on the season.

The final margin could have been a lot bigger, according to CMB head coach Rob Luther.

“It was a good district win for our guys, (but) we left a lot of points on the field,” Luther said. “We had four field goals, a fumble on the 1-yard line going into (the end zone) and a pick in the end zone as well. It was a good start, but we have so much to improve on.”

The Raiders led 21-6 at the half.

In the first quarter Nissen kicked field goals from 20 and 24 yards out. Davis County countered with a 27-yard Justin Utt touchdown run as the two teams were even heading into the second quarter.

Hunter McWhirter found Bryce Kemp on an 11-yard touchdown pass for CMB less than two minutes into the second period. Blake Coughenour added a 3-yard touchdown run with four minutes, 52 seconds left, and with 3:09 to go, the Raiders recorded a safety when Kemp made a tackle in the end zone.

The Raiders increased their edge to 28-6 midway through the third quarter when Nate Bishop found Brady Stover on a 2-yard touchdown pass. But the Mustangs weren’t quite ready to go away as Utt found paydirt on an 8-yard run just before the end of the quarter.

In the fourth quarter Nissen drilled two more field goals to push CMB’s lead to 34-12. His first of the final period was from 31 yards out, then he hit an impressive 42-yarder with just 2:33 to go.

“Joey did a great job nailing all of those field goals,” Luther said.

Kemp picked up more defensive points on the last play of the game. He intercepted a pass by Davis County’s Zach Houf at the goal line and returned it the full 100 yards for a touchdown.

CMB finished with 389 yards on offense. The Raiders had 232 yards rushing and 157 through the air.

On defense, CMB limited Davis County to 227 yards.

“The defense played well again,” Luther said. “They did a great job against the run.”

Davis County only ran for 47 yards on 28 carries.

Kemp caught five passes for 111 yards and he ran for 12 yards on two carries. Defensively he had nine stops and two sacks to go along with his interception and safety.

“Kemp made a ton of plays for us,” Luther said. “He is very talented.”

McWhirter completed 11 of 20 passes for 155 yards with one touchdown and interception apiece and he also ran for 68 yards. Bishop was 1 of 3 passing for two yards and the touchdown, and he added nine yards rushing.

Coughenour rushed for 122 yards on 21 carries and he caught two passes for 16 yards. Stover hauled in three receptions for 20 yards and tacked on 16 yards rushing.

Jake Hennick had six tackles, Stover finished with 5.5 plus an interception and Patrick Girard and Clayton Weltha chipped in five stops apiece.

Utt threw for 61 yards on 5 of 5 passing and he led Davis County in rushing with 34 yards on 13 carries. Houf completed 12 of 20 passes for 119 yards with two interceptions, Matthew Hopkins caught six passes for 78 yards and Jacob Jones made five grabs for 77 yards for the Mustangs, who fell to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the district.

CMB (3-0, 1-0) looks to keep its perfect record intact in a non-conference game with 3A school Nevada (2-1) this Friday. The game will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Baxter.
