Explosive Bombers rout Toreadors in opener
HUXLEY - An up-tempo spread attack is already paying dividends for the Ballard football team as the Bombers flustered Boone all night with its quick-hitting attack in a 33-13 season-opening victory over their old rivals Friday in Huxley.
Tailback Isaiah Johnson and new quarterback Quinton Erickson combined for 301 yards rushing and Erickson also threw for 190 yards to help Ballard overcome four fumbles to avenge three consecutive losses to the Toreadors.
“We really played well,” Ballard head coach Al Christian said. “We made some mistakes and put the ball on the ground, but we’ll fix those. The effort was there and we showed a lot of promise.”
Johnson, the leading returning rusher for Ballard, piled up 170 yards and two touchdowns rushing on 29 carries. Erickson finished with 131 yards and two scores on 19 carries out of the spread to set the tone for Ballard.
“We’re the dynamic duo,” Johnson said. “We’re both going out there, working hard and the offensive line is blocking for us.”
Erickson was also an impressive 15 of 18 through the air with one touchdown pass and interception apiece. The senior was making his first start at quarterback since his freshman year.
“It was pretty intense,” Erickson said. “I haven’t played (quarterback) in a long time and the rustiness showed as I fumbled a few times and threw a pick. But I thought I came back well. The defense did a nice job and the line did great. I’ve just got to carry the ball a little better next time.”
Nathan Macki and Cole Wilson were Erickson’s top targets. Macki caught nine passes for 73 yards, including a 9-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter, and Wilson stepped up with three grabs for 59 yards at tight end.
As a team Ballard finished with 538 yards of offense.
Boone totaled 305 yards. The Toreadors were unable to capitalize on five Bomber turnovers, especially in the second half as they were shut out over the final two quarters despite getting inside the Bomber 20 on two occasions.
“You cannot run the ball up the middle on us,” Ballard defensive lineman Kenny Randolph said. “If they bounce out, we’ve got great linebackers - the best in the state I believe. If we keep this up, we could go very far.”
Randolph finished with seven tackles and an interception. Veteran linebacker Marcus Johnson led Ballard with 16 tackles, including two stops behind the line, and varsity newcomer Kenton Brekke chipped in 12 stops.
Jaymen Tedrow ran for 126 yards, including a 75-yard scoring jaunt in the second quarter, and he caught four passes for 39 yards to lead Boone on offense. Toreador quarterback Tanner Schminke was 22 of 42 passing for 198 yards and Jacob Johnson caught eight passes for 80 yards.
Ashton Clemons had 17 tackles and a fumble recovery to lead Boone defensively. Ryan Olson tacked on 11 stops, Ryan Dighton made 10, Drew Wilber intercepted a pass and Dillon Calkins, Raithe Clemons and Joey Pruismann each recovered a fumble for the Toreadors.
Ballard will host Adel-Desoto-Minburn (1-0) next Friday. The game will start at 7:30 p.m. in at Rich Strouse Field in Huxley.
