CMB clobbers Clarke in district opener
Raiders pull off 15-5 victory
ALLEMAN - A monster third inning helped the Collins-Maxwell-Baxter baseball team roll past Clarke in Class 2A district quarterfinal play Saturday in Alleman.
The Raiders scored 10 runs in the third inning on their way to a 15-5 victory in six innings.
Clarke had a 5-2 lead after two innings before the Raider explosion. CMB pitcher Brady Stover blanked the Indians over the next four innings and the Raiders scored two more runs in the fourth and another in the sixth to end the game due to the 10-run rule.
CMB pounded out 14 hits in the victory. Stover went 3-for-4 with a double, three runs and two RBI and Zach Samson was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and four RBI to lead the way for the Raiders.
Hunter McWhirter also had a big night with the bat as he went 2-for-3 with a double, walk, three runs and two RBI. Seth Balke was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI, Creighton Caple finished 2-for-3 with a walk and a run, Spencer Gauch went 1-for-4 with a run and two RBI, Aric Broderick smacked a double and Jacob Stratton and Tucker Maxwell both scored twice for CMB.
Stover struck out 12 and he allowed five earned runs on five hits with three walks in six innings to earn the victory. The win put CMB at 8-13 on the season.
Zach Harmsen gave up 11 runs - three earned - on nine hits with three strikeouts and walks apiece in 2 ? innings to take the loss for Clarke. Gable Reece went 2-for-3 with a double, run and two RBI and Trevor Kirkpatrick doubled and drove in three runs for the Indians.

COLLINS - Collins-Maxwell-Baxter played well for five innings, then fell apart in a 10-1 loss to Madrid July 9 at Collins.
CMB trailed 2-1 going into the top of the sixth; then Madrid erupted for seven runs to put the game away.
CMB only had four hits against Tiger pitcher Mason Gibson. Hunter McWhirter was 2-for-3 with the Raiders’ lone run.
Creighton Caple walked twice and drove in McWhirter.
Nate Bishop was the losing pitcher after giving up seven earned runs on eight hits with six walks and four strikeouts in five innings. Samson allowed three runs on four hits with one walk in 1 ? innings and McWhirter struck out one and gave up one hit in ? of an inning.
Gibson struck out five and walked two in seven innings to get the win. He also did most of the damage offensively for Madrid by going 4-for-5 with a double, home run and six RBI.

GRANGER - A hot start helped Collins-Maxwell-Baxter take care of Woodward-Granger by a 6-1 score in non-conference play July 8 at Granger.
CMB jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one inning. By the end of two innings the Raider lead grew to 5-0 and Woodward-Granger never mounted a serious threat over the final five innings.
Seth Balke tossed a five-hitter with five strikeouts and four walks in seven innings to get the victory. He also went 1-for-3 with a run and two RBI for CMB on offense.
The Raiders had good balance on offense as five different players ended up with an RBI.
Creighton Caple went 1-for-3 with a run, walk, steal and RBI and Spencer Gauch finished 1-for-2 with a run, walk and RBI. Tucker Maxwell doubled, walked, stole a base and drove in a run and Jacob Stratton was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Zach Samson ended up 2-for-4 with a double and a run and Hunter McWhirter singled and scored twice for the Raiders.
Alex Bodermann took the loss after allowing three unearned runs in ? of an inning for Woodward-Granger. Dylan Garland gave up three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and walks apiece in 6 ? innings for the Hawks.
Brady Aunspach went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead Woodward-Granger on offense.
