In May, Collins-Maxwell Elementary received a two-year grant to approach literacy, focusing on select high risk students. Thirty-three students each received three books matching their reading level to keep in their own home libraries, along with a family page explaining why it is helpful for students to read at home. The books selected were high quality and a mix of fiction and nonfiction. That also overlapped with classroom themes and topics to support student vocabulary and language learning. Receiving the grant also allowed us to give 21 books to our Elementary Media — where we will be happy to share the love of reading with all students who wish to check out any of the books.
