Someone could suddenly make a lot of money on Friday night, when the next drawing is held for a Mega Millions jackpot of more than $1 billion.

Matching all five numbers and the Mega Ball in the drawing at 10 p.m. CT triggers the jackpot payout. Matching all five numbers without matching the Mega Ball still yields a nice consolation prize: $1 million.

Thirteen people in Iowa have won a $1 million prize in Mega Millions, including one earlier this year. But no Iowan has won more, according to data from the Iowa Lottery.

That's not to say Iowa hasn't had big jackpot winners in other games. In 2018, Lerynne West of Redfield won the largest lottery prize in Iowa history: $343.9 million from a Powerball ticket.

Four other tickets worth more than $100 million have been sold in Iowa since 2006, and since the Iowa Lottery began in 1985, more than 170 people or groups have won prizes of at least $1 million.

You can browse a list of the state's biggest winners at our new Iowa Lottery database, built using data from the Iowa Lottery.

Will there be a new biggest winner in Iowa? We'll find out on Friday night.
