Here's what you'll find on Small Business Saturday in Ames, Story City and Huxley
Small Business Saturday is a shopping campaign that was started by American Express in 2010 and quickly gained traction with consumers.
Taking place the Saturday after Thanksgiving, this holiday season is an especially important one for small businesses bouncing back from a tough year in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Ames Main Street is part of Small Business Saturday, with hours from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., although some stores will be open different hours.
The support of local consumers is crucial to the success of downtowns and local merchants, Debi Durham, director of the Iowa Economic Development Authority, told the Ames Tribune last month.
“We have to do our part,” Durham said. “I think we really learned that during COVID — that we have to rally around our local businesses.”
Shopping local is also a way to beat the supply chain problems being seen in some big retailers.
“I’m not going to have a supply chain issue when I shop this year because I’m shopping all local, small businesses and artists,” Durham said.
Many small businesses in Ames are participating in promotions for Small Business Saturday.
Ames Public Library’s Literary Grounds Bookstore is even getting in on the act with a sale on Saturday, Nov. 27, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Customers can shop for gently used books and board games, with most items marked down $1.
Story City has 'My Favorite Things' theme
Small communities’ business districts — from Story City to Huxley — are also encouraging shoppers to check out their stores. Many offer handmade, vintage and Iowa-made products.
In Story City, Small Business Saturday starts at 9 a.m. with the theme "My Favorite Things." The Story City GCC is offering swag bags while supplies last. Shoppers are encouraged to stop by the GCC office, 524 Broad St., before they start their gift-buying.
