Bizzy’s Boutique opens at the North Grand Mall on Thursday — the first storefront for the line of children’s and women’s clothing created by Huxley's Sydney Petersen.

It’s an endeavor that started just over two years ago in Petersen’s basement. A year ago, the business moved into its first warehouse, then to a second three weeks ago.

Bizzy’s has quickly grown thanks in part to Facebook Live videos, where Petersen and her staff show clothing on women and children of all shapes and sizes. Inclusivity is important to Petersen.

“We are very size-inclusive,” Petersen said. “The average size for women is a 16, so it’s really important to us that we carry all sizes. We have models of all sizes and all shapes.”

The business started selling baby swaddles, with a buy-one-donate-one program called Love, Izzy that continues today.

The finishing portion of Bizzy's Boutique is ready for the upcoming grand opening of the store at North Grand Mall in Ames.

Sydney and her husband, Jordan, welcomed their second child, Izabelle, in 2019. They didn’t know until she was born that she had Pierre Robin Sequence, a rare disease that affects approximately 1 in 30,000 girls.

As a mom wanting desperately to comfort her daughter, she created swaddles using soft material and joyful patterns. After the couple got to take Izzy home, Sydney had the idea to grow the swaddles into a business where one would be donated to Blank Children’s Hospital each time one was purchased.

To date, the business has donated about 2,000 swaddles. The project has expanded to include a T-shirt available in adult and children’s sizes, which also initiates the donation of a swaddle to a hospital.

Bizzy’s Boutique grew to include children’s clothing designed by Petersen, and then expanded to include offerings for women, too — some of which were her favorite lines of women’s clothing, including Judy Blue Jeans.

“We are so excited to have Bizzy’s Boutique join the North Grand family,” Heather Courtney, the mall’s marketing coordinator, said. “It will be a wonderful addition with her line of children’s and women’s clothing, accessories, shoes and more.”

The store also sells a line of children’s eating utensils and dishes called Bizzy Nibbles, a selection of gifts, official Iowa State — and some Iowa — apparel along with Cyclone-inspired clothing designed by Petersen.

She's also created her own line of beauty products called Bizzy Beauty.

“I’ve been working on it for about a year now,” Petersen said. “It's all vegan, non-toxic; it's just such great stuff.”

Petersen’s boutique will also offer beauty services in an area tucked away at the back of the store.

“We’ll do facials, eyelash extensions, massage — and that back area will have their own entrance, as well,” she said. “It will be a full experience; like, 'Come and stay and take a girls' day' — we'll do events, like, girls' night sipping and shopping and private parties.”
