If you are a football fan and live in the state of Iowa, you probably have a favorite team. And there is also a good chance that someone in your home, or neighborhood and the town you live in either likes the same team you do or does not.

We are talking about the Cy-Hawk Rivalry. When fans can’t agree (imagine that), they call it a “divided” whatever. In the case of Slater, Iowa, the entire town apparently is divided between loyalties to Iowa State Cyclones or the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Not much can be done to change minds one way or another, so the Slater Community Club sponsors the “Town Divided Tailgate.”

It all began three years ago, when WHO TV-Soundoff Nation announced it would be making a stop in Slater on their popular RV TV tour en route to Ames for the big game. The RV-TV route did not include Slater last September and Slater is not on the route this year either. This year’s route consists of Polk City, Rockwell City, Humboldt and then Ames on Sept. 13.

But not being on the route doesn’t mean that Slater won’t go all out before the big game. The town is hosting its annual Town Divided Tailgate on Thursday evening, Sept. 12, beginning at 4 p.m. and ending with a flash of fireworks at 9 p.m.

Let the party begin. Here is a rundown:

Main Street will be closed from 3 to 11 p.m., from Story Street to Tama Street. Please park on side streets and come to Main Street for all the fun and activities.

Bring your own beverages and set up your tailgate on Main Street.

Howletts, Weine Wonderland, Double Dipped and B Fabulous BBQ will be on hand for some great food options. Please plan on coming and supporting these local businesses.

ISU-IOWA Yard Decorating Contest: If you want to enter, send a private message to the Slater Community Club on Facebook with your name and email address, or email slateriacommunityclub@gmail.com. If you make a donation, you can have your name put in for five drawing items. There will be both Iowa and ISU tote bags and yard flags and an autographed Big 12 Coach of the Year framed poster of Coach Matt Campbell. Free bubbles for the kids too.
