A Town Divided, Slater prepares for all-out tailgate party
If you are a football fan and live in the state of Iowa, you probably have a favorite team. And there is also a good chance that someone in your home, or neighborhood and the town you live in either likes the same team you do or does not.
We are talking about the Cy-Hawk Rivalry. When fans can’t agree (imagine that), they call it a “divided” whatever. In the case of Slater, Iowa, the entire town apparently is divided between loyalties to Iowa State Cyclones or the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Not much can be done to change minds one way or another, so the Slater Community Club sponsors the “Town Divided Tailgate.”
It all began three years ago, when WHO TV-Soundoff Nation announced it would be making a stop in Slater on their popular RV TV tour en route to Ames for the big game. The RV-TV route did not include Slater last September and Slater is not on the route this year either. This year’s route consists of Polk City, Rockwell City, Humboldt and then Ames on Sept. 13.
But not being on the route doesn’t mean that Slater won’t go all out before the big game. The town is hosting its annual Town Divided Tailgate on Thursday evening, Sept. 12, beginning at 4 p.m. and ending with a flash of fireworks at 9 p.m.
Let the party begin. Here is a rundown:
Main Street will be closed from 3 to 11 p.m., from Story Street to Tama Street. Please park on side streets and come to Main Street for all the fun and activities.
Bring your own beverages and set up your tailgate on Main Street.
Howletts, Weine Wonderland, Double Dipped and B Fabulous BBQ will be on hand for some great food options. Please plan on coming and supporting these local businesses.
ISU-IOWA Yard Decorating Contest: If you want to enter, send a private message to the Slater Community Club on Facebook with your name and email address, or email email@example.com. Make sure your yard is decorated by Tuesday, Sept. 10. The leaders of the Community Club will be judging this contest.

All proceeds go to the new community center/library project. It will cost you $10 to put someone in jail; $20 to get out of jail right away and $25 to get out right away and put someone else in jail.
6 to 8 p.m.: Chili Cook-Off at the Slater Fire Station. Everyone will get to sample and vote one time for their favorite chili. This contest is limited to the first 10 teams that sign up by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.

Charlie’s Angels Cystic Fibrosis Team will be offering those attending an opportunity to take home free posters from both ISU and IOWA football, as well as a friendly competition between the Iowa supporters and the ISU supporters to see who can fill their respective Angel container with donations. If you make a donation, you can have your name put in for five drawing items. There will be both Iowa and ISU tote bags and yard flags and an autographed Big 12 Coach of the Year framed poster of Coach Matt Campbell. Free bubbles for the kids too. Come support whichever team and definitely support Team Charlie’s Angels.
