Senior show seeking photos of pets and their owners
Seniors, a photo of you and your pet could be part of the pre-show entertainment at the 2016 Senior Variety Show in August.
The producers of this year’s show, “Aardvarks to Zebras,” want to give special recognition to the bonds between animals and humans. The organizers said that projecting photos of Story County residents ages 60 and older with their pets on a large screen before the opening number seems like a fun way to celebrate those connections.
“We want to honor the animals in our lives, from shelter pets to therapeutic companions,” said variety show committee member Marilyn Johnson. “Every act will be related to animals in some way and we thought seeing people from our area with their pets would be an enjoyable way to put audiences in an animal-loving mood.”
Net proceeds from this year’s performances will benefit the Story County Animal Shelter and other local programs serving seniors.
While the show’s committee is eager to display plenty of photos of owners with dogs and cats, they are also hoping seniors who own birds, horses and other less common pets also respond to the call for photos.
Variety show volunteers Paul Meenan and Lauris Olson will be collecting submitted photos and taking photos of seniors with pets that they see out and about in the county during July. Some photos of seniors with their pets will be taken by appointment as the volunteers’ schedules allow.
“Our goal is to get pictures of people with their pets from all over the county, not just Ames,” Johnson said. “Our show features performers countywide, so we want to get photos of seniors with pets countywide.”
High-resolution digital photos may be mailed to email@example.com. Please include the owner’s name, the pet’s name and the community or township in Story County where the owner lives.
People who wish to submit printed photographs or inquire about setting up an appointment to have a digital photo taken should call Olson at 515-451-7293.
“Aardvarks to Zebras,” the 22nd Senior Variety Show, will be presented at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 19 and 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21 at Ames City Auditorium, 520 Sixth St. For more information, visit www.SeniorVarietyShow.org or find them on Facebook.
