Food for Thought off to a great start

Monday was the first day of Nevada’s summer program, Food for Thought. The first day was a huge success, according to organizers at the Volunteer Center of Story County.

The program runs through July 28 and depends largely on volunteers who read and play with students, serve lunch and help with program logistics.

The Food for Thought program ensures that children are safe, healthy and engaged in learning during the summer. Children are given opportunities to explore, develop hypothesis, test theories and look for conclusions as they participate in a variety of STREAM (science, technology, reading, engineering, arts and mathematics) enrichment activities.

The six-week enrichment program includes breakfast and lunch, helping combat hunger during the summer months. The program runs Monday through Thursday mornings. The theme for the 2015 program is “On Your Mark, Get Set … Read.”

Volunteers are needed for food service positions, as well as enrichment positions working directly with the children. All volunteers attend a pre-service orientation and are subject to background checks. All volunteers must have completed at least freshman year in high school and be 14 or older.
