Getting hitched: Weddings in small-town Iowa

Stroll down the aisle, decade by decade, at the upcoming presentation on Iowa weddings and wedding dresses. Barbara Mallon, president of the Slater Area Historical Association (SAHA), will be giving a talk based on a 2012 exhibit the SAHA organized, which included over 30 wedding gowns, bridesmaids’ and flower girl dresses, dating from 1912 to 1980. The 2012 Slater show was so successful that the SAHA created a slide presentation of the exhibit with over 160 photos, and all of the fascinating stories behind the dresses and brides.

Ms. Mallon’s roots are in Slater and the surrounding community. Her involvement with the Heritage Hall Museum is a passion of hers, and she believes uncovering the layers of history in the area “is rewarding beyond measure.”

This event will be held on Saturday, May 21, at 9 a.m. at the Nord-Kalsem Community Center, 204 W. Fifth St., Huxley. There will also be a “free table” including fabrics and patterns. Refreshments will be served. Cost is $2 at the door, and it is open to the public. Go to centraliowaasg.org for more information.
