A visitor walks through Cambridge

Stephen Basila, Jr. wants to help a friend, so he’s been walking and catching rides to West Virginia to surprise him. On Friday, Aug. 14, the young man was staying at Josiah Chandler Outdoor Recreation Area near Cambridge.

Basila grew up in Phoenix and was working at a cannery in Juno, Alaska, for the summer, when he decided he wanted to walk and catch rides to West Virginia to help a friend.

Basila started out from Alaska 16 days ago, and said he’s met lots of people, and he has story for every day of the trip.

“I bought the backpack for $20, but everything I’m using was given to me along the way,” Basila said. “You can’t write the stuff I’ve seen. It’s crazy how many people have helped me. The one thing I’ve learned is that courage and kindness can take you a long way.”
