Ames woman arrested for shooting near Maxwell

An Ames woman was picked up Monday night by the Story County Sheriff’s Office in connection with a shooting near Maxwell that day that left one person hospitalized.

Lt. Leanna Ellis said Candace Mosley, 33, of Ames was sought for questioning and was stopped by officials.

According to the Story County Sheriff’s Office, Dwight Carpenter Jr., 66, was shot just before 5 p.m. Monday at his rural home outside of Maxwell by his niece. The weapon used in the shooting may have been a double-barrelled .410-gauge shotgun, said Ellis.

A news release issued by the sheriff’s office said Mosley fled the scene after the shooting on a motorcycle. Carpenter was taken to Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, where he was in surgery Monday night, Ellis said.

Ellis said it was too early in the investigation to comment on a possible motive or what may have led up to the shooting.

“We’re very limited in what we can say until we can continue the investigation and conduct more interviews,” Ellis said.
