Slater celebrates another fantastic Fourth
Another successful year is in the books for the Slater Fourth of July Celebration. Just like in years prior, the hard-working people who spend months planning and days setting up and serving the crowds deserve a great deal of thanks. Of course, the beautiful weather deserves some credit as well.
The four-day celebration began Thursday evening with the Kiddie Parade, followed by a puppet show, petting zoo and performance by the 34th Army National Band.
Friday morning, at 10 a.m. sharp, the parade began down main street toward the mass of people lining the streets. About an hour later, the final vehicles were passing by. After the parade, Nelson Park was the place to be for food and entertainment. People could sit and watch a show in the shelter, shop at the vendor tents, get a history lesson at Perry Smith’s Civil War display or head over to Grimm Park for the horseshoe tournament. The fireworks began at 10 p.m. and as always, Fred Mason and the Slater Fire Department put on an amazing show.
Saturday morning began cloudy, cold and wet, which pushed the bicycle poker run back and maybe kept a few from participating, but the mud volleyball players didn’t seem to mind the conditions. The stage at Nelson Park was again filled with talent, beginning with The Sand Box Guy, who played songs geared toward children, a dog show, hypnotist and state fair talent show winners.
Queen candidate Molly Astarita and Princess Josie Oldenkamp were crowned after the nearly 12,000 raffle tickets were counted and the raffle ticket drawing followed.
The weekend wound down on Sunday with Church in Nelson Park and the Slater Nite Hawks playing a double header baseball game against the Collins Clippers.
