NEWTON – The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter girls’ track team picked up eight medals, placing third out of eight teams at the Cardinal Relays in Newton May 8.
The Raider girls won one event, took second in three more and added four bronze medals, racking up 90.5 points to beat North Mahaska by 20.5 points for third. Newton and Prairie City-Monroe dominated the team standings as the Cardinals won with 167 points and the Mustangs were second with a score of 152.5.
Maddy Poage won CMB’s lone gold medal and she also was part of the Raiders’ runner-up sprint medley relay team.
Poage’s top jump in the high jump was four feet, 10 inches. In the sprint medley, Poage ran the opening leg and was followed by Toni Spencer Mackenzie Schmitz and Bridget Hurley as they combined to run a time of one minute, 57 seconds.
Poage, Spencer, Hurley and Schmitz also took third in the 4 X 100 with a time of :53.04.
Schmitz, Spencer and Hurley also medaled in one individual event apiece.
Schmitz won a silver medal in the 100 with a time of :14.02 and Spencer earned a bronze in the long jump after peaking with a jump of 15-1. Hurley took third in the open 400 with a 1:06 showing.
Spencer also placed fourth in the 100 with a time of :14.18 and Hurley came in fourth in the high jump with a jump of 4-4.
Abbie Haupert and Payge Jurgens both medaled in a throwing event for CMB.
Haupert placed second in the discus with a toss of 114-7. Jurgens was third in the shot put after peaking with a toss of 35-3.75.
Heather Jessen gave CMB a fourth-place time of 12:43 in the 3,000 and she took sixth in the 1,500 after running a 5:59. Megan Ritter finished fifth in both the 200 and long jump with respective efforts of :30.07 and 14-6.25.
Stephanie Twohey, Chasity Moody, Veronica Condon and Elizabeth Jones ran a fourth-place time of 12:18 in the 4 X 800 and Poage, Ritter, Bekah Pearson and Haupert placed fifth in the 4 X 200 with a time of 2:00.
Mikayla Eslinger placed sixth in the discus with a throw of 97-2. Ritter, Kathleen Baldwin, Aly Holsinger and Chasity Moody ended up sixth in the 4 X 400 after clocking in at 5:08.
