NEVADA – The Ballard girls’ track team had a successful day at the Cub Classic girls’ track meet May 6 in Nevada as the Bombers picked up eight medals and edged out Nevada and Clarke for third place in the final team standings.

Ballard earned two gold and silver medals apiece and they also won four bronze medals, finishing with 85 points. The Bombers beat Nevada by three points and Clarke by six for third place among six teams.

Adel-Desoto-Minburn easily won the team championship with 167 points and Carlisle came in second with a score of 122.

Abby Kohut-Jackson had a hand in both victories for Ballard. She won the 1,500-meter run and led off for the victorious Bomber 4 X 800 relay team.

Ashley Meldrum also did well in both events as she won the bronze in the 1,500 and ran the third leg in the 4 X 800.

Kohut-Jackson’s winning time in the 1,500 was five minutes, 12.23 seconds. Meldrum finished in 5:44.97, coming in just behind the runner-up time of 5:41.75 by Perry’s Emma Olejniczak.

The Bomber 4 X 800 team made a mockery of their competition. With Val Charter running the second leg and Alexis Scharfenkamp anchoring, Ballard finished in 10:39.86 to beat Nevada’s runner-up time by over 50 seconds.

Ballard added runner-up finishes in the 4 X 200 and 4 X 400 events and the Bombers took third in the 4 X 100.

Gabby Scherle, Jenna Moody, Scharfenkamp and Ellie Godwin clocked in at 1:57.48 in the 4 X 200 to beat Clarke’s third-place time by over 15 seconds and trail only Nevada’s 1:52.46 showing.

Scherle and Moody were joined by Madison McInroy and Kennedy Newell in running a :55.59 in the 4 X 100 trail only the :52.99 by ADM and :53.32 from Nevada.

In the 4 X 400 Charter, Godwin, Kohut-Jackson and Scharfenkamp teamed to run a 4:33.20. The Bombers beat Carlisle by nearly six seconds for the silver medal and they came in a little over 11 seconds behind ADM’s winning time of 4:23.61.

Kohut-Jackson added an individual bronze medal for Ballard in the 800. She ran a 2:41.11 to come in behind the 2:24.85 by ADM’s Brianna Mueller and the 2:36.25 showing from Clarke’s Delaney May.

Erin Snell had the best outing in field events for Ballard. Snell took third in the long jump with a leap of 13 feet, 5.25 inches.
