ALGONA - The Ballard boys’ basketball team took a quarter to assert its dominance over Webster City, but once the Bombers got going they were unstoppable, posting a 77-48 victory in the Class 3A substate quarterfinals Monday.


Ballard only led by three points after the first quarter. But the Bombers outscored the Lynx 57-25 over the next two quarters to put the game away and advance to the substate semifinals with a 16-6 record.


Ballard shot 52 percent overall from the field. The Bombers made eight 3-pointers and came up with 34 rebounds and 13 steals.


Connor Drew and Ashton Hermann both put up 17 points for Ballard in the win. Drew also had nine rebounds and two assists and Hermann five rebounds and two steals.


Kale Krogh tacked on 12 points, six rebounds and a block and Nic Edwards 10 points. Kade Reinertson finished with seven points, Mason Murphy handed out seven assists and Jacob Ihle scored five points.


Ballard will face Algona (18-4) in the substate semifinals tonight. The game takes place at 7 p.m. in Algona.

ALLEMAN - Stout defense, good outside shooting and strong rebounding gave Ballard a 67-35 victory over North Polk to close out the regular season Feb. 20.


The Bombers held the Comets to 24-percent shooting from the field and made nine 3-pointers. They also held a 36-26 rebounding advantage in improving to 15-6 on the season.


Ballard put the game away in the third quarter. The Bombers outscored North Polk 23-7 in the period to build a 56-27 lead.


The twin tower tandem of 6-6 Connor Drew and 6-5 Kale Krogh led Ballard to victory. Drew had 15 points and seven rebounds and Krogh 10 points and rebounds apiece plus three blocks.


Mason Murphy added nine points and four assists. Nic Edwards scored eight points and Kade Reinertson put up four points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists.


North Polk fell to 8-13. Trevor Mathis led the Comets with nine points and Hunter Manock and Austin Parkins scored five apiece.
