BAXTER - A fierce rally wasn’t enough for the Collins-Maxwell boys’ basketball team in a 73-62 loss to Baxter Saturday.


The Spartans erupted for 32 points in the fourth quarter. They outscored the Bolts by 12 points in the quarter, but they had too much ground to make up in falling to 7-11 overall and finishing 6-6 in the Iowa Star Conference South Division.


Collins-Maxwell was hurt by a huge discrepancy in free throws. The Spartans were only 5 of 10 on free throws compared to Baxter’s 24 of 30 showing.


Baxter held a slight 46 to 44-percent edge in shooting accuracy from the field. Collins-Maxwell held a 32-28 rebounding advantage.


Brett Livesay had 20 points, 11 rebounds and one block for Collins-Maxwell in the loss. John Kasper finished with 14 points, seven rebounds and one assist and Luke Huntrods, Jace Huntrods and Ben Hofer scored eight points apiece.


Cole Damman went for 29 points, eight rebounds and four assists in helping Baxter improve to 14-5 overall and finish second in the ISC South Division with a 10-2 record. Carter Nelsen also had a big game for the Bolts with 23 points and eight rebounds.

TRAER - Collins-Maxwell hung tough early, but fell apart after the first quarter in a 56-30 loss to North Tama Feb. 6.


The Spartans trailed 16-15 after the opening eight minutes. They fell behind by 11 points at the half and the game got away from them in the fourth quarter, with the Redhawks ending the game on a 17-3 run.


Collins-Maxwell fell to 7-10 overall and 6-5 in the Iowa Star Conference South Division. The Spartans had a 38-31 rebounding advantage, but they gave up 13 steals and only tallied three themselves and also shot just 27 percent from the field and made only 1 of 12 3-pointers.


Mason Markley had 11 points and four rebounds, John Kasper eight points and five boards and Brett Livesay four points, 10 rebounds and three blocks for Collins-Maxwell. Brayden Bartleson scored three points and Luke Huntrods and Weston Kahler two apiece for Collins-Maxwell in a losing effort.


North Tama improved to 8-10 overall and 7-4 in the conference. Ryan McLean paced the Redhawks with 21 points and eight rebounds and Zach Greiner tacked on nine points and six steals.

MAXWELL - Collins-Maxwell suffered a gut-wrenching 68-65 loss to rival Baxter in overtime Feb. 4.


The Spartans came back from a 35-27 halftime deficit to tie the score at 59-59 by the end of regulation. But they were held to six points in the extra session in falling to 7-9 overall and 6-4 in the Iowa Star Conference South Division.


Collins-Maxwell got off 18 more shots from the field and converted six more than Baxter,. But the Spartans were only 1 of 17 from 3-point range compared to Baxter’s 6 of 17 showing.


The Spartans fell despite dominating the glass by a 47-28 margin. They also had 10 steals to the Bolts’ eight.


Baxter had the edge at the foul line. The Bolts nailed 20 of 27 free throws and Collins-Maxwell made 14 of 23.


Brett Livesay went for 23 points, 16 rebounds and a block for Collins-Maxwell in a losing effort. Ben Hoffer added 14 points and seven rebounds and Kadin Bennett 11 points.


Luke Huntrods tacked on six points and four rebounds and Mason Markley five points and one block. Daniel Klein chipped in two points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals.


Baxter improved to 12-5 overall and 9-2 in the conference.


Cole Damman went for a game-high 31 points for the Bolts after making 14 of 17 free throws and he also handed out five assists. Kael Johnston finished with 15 points and Carter Nelsen 12 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks for Baxter.
