BAXTER - The Collins-Maxwell girls’ basketball team wrapped up Iowa Star Conference play with a 45-37 victory at Baxter Saturday.


The Spartans prevailed thanks to a strong finish. They outscored the Bolts 19-10 in the fourth quarter to earn their second win over their rivals in four days.


Collins-Maxwell finished second to Colo-NESCO in the Iowa Star Conference South Division with a 10-2 conference mark and improved to 16-4 overall with the victory. Baxter fell to 12-8 overall and ended up 7-5 in the conference.


Free throws made the difference for the Spartans in the win. They were 13 of 15 from the line compared to the Bolts’ 4 of 12 showing.


Both teams made 16 field goals. But Collins-Maxwell was more accurate, converting 48 percent of its shots to Baxter’s 36-percent showing.


Reagan Franzen recorded her second double-double in a row with 13 points and 10 rebounds for Collins-Maxwell. She also had four steals, two assists and a block.


Alexis Houge finished with 11 points, eight rebounds, four assists and one steal and Emma Kahler 10 points, three blocks and one steal. Kenzi Wierson added six points, seven rebounds and three steals, Trinity Stover three points, four assists and two steals, Ella Kahler two points and Brooke Christie three rebounds and assists apiece.


McKenzie Eslinger led Baxter with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Caitlyn Bruntz tacked on 13 points and three steals for the Bolts.

TRAER - Great defense over the first three quarters enabled Collins-Maxwell to take down North Tama Feb. 6, 43-34.


The Spartans held the Redhawks to just 15 points over the first three quarters. That allowed them to take a 13-point lead into the fourth quarter despite scoring just one point in the third quarter.


Collins-Maxwell improved to 15-4 overall and 9-2 in the Iowa Star Conference South Division. The Spartans held the Redhawks to 22-percent shooting from the field and held a convincing 30-17 rebounding advantage.


Reagan Franzen posted a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds and she also had six steals and four assists for the Spartans. Alexis Houge tacked on 12 points and two assists and steals apiece and Trinity Stover four points and three assists and steals apiece.


Kenzi Wierson contributed three points and eight rebounds and Brooke Christie scored two points for the Spartans.


North Tama fell to 4-15 overall and 3-9 in the conference. Takoa Kopriva delivered 13 points and three steals and Rylee McLean 10 points, five rebounds and four steals for the Redhawks.

MAXWELL - Collins-Maxwell won an exciting rivalry game with Baxter Feb. 4., holding off the Bolts for a 44-43 victory.


The Spartans led 26-23 at the half. They held Baxter to five points in the third quarter to go up eight and then withstood the Bolts’ 15-8 run over the final eight minutes to improve to 14-4 on the season and 8-2 in the Iowa Star Conference South Division.


Collins-Maxwell shot 45 percent from the field and held Baxter to 32-percent shooting. The Spartans also held a slim 32-29 rebounding advantage to overcome a 4 of 9 showing from the foul line.


Alexis Houge had 13 points and two assists, Ella Kahler eight points and Reagan Franzen seven points five rebounds, two steals and a block for the Spartans. Kenzi Wierson finished with six points and three rebounds, Brooke Christie three points and six boards, Emma Kahler three points and four assists, Trinity Stover two points, three steals and a block and Isabelle Hill two points.


Baxter fell to 12-6 overall and 7-3 in the conference. McKenzie Eslinger put up 15 points and 10 rebounds, Lili Vansice eight points and three assists and Caitlyn Bruntz eight points and three steals for the Bolts.
