MAXWELL — The Collins-Maxwell boys’ basketball team couldn’t get enough stops defensively to keep pace with Colfax-Mingo in a 73-59 loss to the Tigerhawks Jan. 9.

The Spartans gave up 21 points in three separate quarters. They couldn’t slow down Colfax-Mingo’s Brady Berkey, who went off for 33 points.

“We couldn’t stop him,” Collins-Maxwell head coach Wes Stover said. “Coming in he averaged 20 a game, so we had decided to let him get his 20 and shutdown the other guys. He had his 20 by halftime, so that wasn’t helping us, and a couple of their other guys did more damage on us than we had hoped.”

Colfax-Mingo led 42-23 at the half. Collins-Maxwell put up a much better fight in the second half, getting within 44-33 on a Mason Markley 3-pointer midway through the third quarter. But Colfax-Mingo quickly pushed its lead back to 19 points and the Spartans never made a serious run after that in falling to 4-5.

“We didn’t have a good night defensively,” Stover said. “We played hard in the second half, we just didn’t play hard enough. We just let them outplay us tonight.”

Markley provided a bright spot for Collins-Maxwell in a losing effort. He scored 20 points for the second time in three games, making 6 of 10 shots from 3-point range.

“We took advantage of their inside defense,” Markley said. “They didn’t have a lot of guys depth-wise in the post, so we kicked inside and (when they doubled) I got my shots. I’m working on my shot in practice. Pump-faking and driving helps get my confidence boosted on the perimeter.”

Brett Livesay added 10 points, five rebounds, four steals and three blocks for the Spartans. John Kasper also scored 10 points and handed out three assists, Daniel Klein netted two 3-pointers and scored eight points, Kadin Bennett had five points, Weston Kahler four and Jace Huntrods two.

Berkey ended up making 10 of 13 field goals and all 12 of his free throws and he also pulled down eight rebounds dished out three assists in helping Colfax-Mingo improve to 6-2. Cole Bracewell added 17 points and six rebounds and Jake Nichols 10 points and six boards for the Tigerhawks.
