TRAER — The Collins-Maxwell wrestling team ended up with one wrestler on top of the medal stand at the Redhawk Invitational Saturday.


Jacob Pierick took first at 120 pounds for Collins-Maxwell. Clayton Leslie came in third at 126 and Joseph Butcher fourth at 132 as the only other Spartan wrestlers to compete in the tournament.


Pierick received a bye then pinned Baxter’s Cole Smith in four minutes, 34 seconds to reach the finals. In the championship round PIerick stuck North Cedar’s Ashlynn Miller in 53 seconds to claim the title and improve to 13-5 on the season.


Leslie went 1-2 in the tournament to move his season record to 4-11. He pinned Riceville’s Kooper Tweite in 1:19 then lost by fall to North Cedar’s Chase Miller and WACO’s Jalen Collins.


Butcher was 0-3. He lost by a 3-1 decision to WACO’s Ryan Maschmann, by technical fall to North Tama’s Zane Nelson and by a 5-0 decision to Riceville’s J.D. Beran.


With its limited roster Collins-Maxwell took sixth out of seven teams, scoring 22 points to beat Tripoli by one point for sixth. North Tama won the team championship with 90.5 points and Riceville was a close second with 85 points.
