HUXLEY — The Ballard football team couldn’t recover from a rough second quarter in a 28-12 homecoming loss to Winterset Friday.

After a scoreless first quarter the Bombers were outscored 21-6 in the second. They were held to only one more touchdown the rest of the way in falling to 1-3 on the season.

“Winterset is a very good team,” Ballard co-head coach Corey Vespestad said. “I’m proud of how our kids fought and never gave up.”

Ballard held Winterset to 98 yards rushing, but gave up 239 through the air. Bomber quarterback Connor Drew threw for 205 yards, but the Bombers were limited to 78 on the ground.

Turnovers hurt Ballard. The Bombers forced two turnovers, but coughed up the ball four times.

Sam Petersen accounted for both Ballard touchdowns. Petersen caught a 46-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter and a 17-yard scoring strike from Drew in the third.

Petersen finished with 63 yards on two receptions and Nic Edwards had 62 in five. Jacob Ihle added three catches for 30 yards, Bryce Haessig two for 28 and Nolan Schonhorst four for 22.

Drew led Ballard in rushing with 35 yards on six carries. Donovan Bertrand tacked on 21 yards on seven attempts.

Sam Salasek had 13.5 tackles, Petersen 5.5 stops plus and interception and Mason Murphy four tackles and a pick for Ballard on defense. Mason Askelsen and Riley Neel chipped in four stops apiece.

Winterset improved to 3-1. Jaden Sweeney threw for 239 yards and three touchdowns and Brock Johnson made six receptions for 121 yards and two scores for the Huskies.

Ballard will travel to Gilbert this week to take on the Tigers (2-2) to begin Class 3A District 8 play.

“We look forward to playing Gilbert this week,” Vespestad said. “It will be a tough road game. They are well coached and are physical.”

The game between the Bombers and Tigers will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
