ACKLEY — The Collins-Maxwell football team couldn’t find an answer to a physical AGWSR team in the third quarter of a 72-46 loss to the Cougars Friday.

Collins-Maxwell was still within striking distance at the half, only trailing 36-22. But AGWSR put four touchdowns on the board in the third quarter, outscoring the Spartans 30-8 to pull away in the 8-man District 5 opener for both teams.

“We played very well in the first half,” Collins-Maxwell head coach Cory Crnkovich said. “The second half we let them push us around on defense. They kept gashing us in the run game. We couldn’t stop it.

Jaden Penning had three touchdown runs and he also hauled in a 55-yard touchdown reception for AGWSR in the first half. Titan Opperman also ran for a Cougar score.

The pitch-catch combo of Kadin Bennett and Brett Livesay kept Collins-Maxwell in the game during the first half. Livesay caught touchdown passes of 29 and 70 yards and Bennett also found Luke Huntrods on an 8-yard scoring strike.

In the third quarter Penning added two more scoring runs, Brody Roder had a 6-yard touchdown run and returned a kick 65 yards to paydirt and Opperman also found the end zone on a run to blow the game open for AGWSR. Collins-Maxwell’s only score of the quarter came on a 33-yard pass from Bennett to Livesay.

Despite the rough third quarter Collins-Maxwell kept fight until the end.

AGWSR went up 72-30 on a 46-yard Trey Lashbrook run in the fourth quarter. But Collins-Maxwell put up two more touchdowns before the game ended, with Bennett finding Livesay one more time - this one from 28 yards out - and also hooking up with Caleb Dvorak on a 15-yard scoring toss.

“AGWSR is a solid football team, they wanted it a little more than we did,” Crnkovich said. “We beat ourselves on numerous occasions. We have to limit turnovers and create some for ourselves.”

Collins-Maxwell totaled 391 yards on offense. Bennett completed 22 of 41 passes for 333 yards and six touchdowns with two interceptions and Livesay made 16 receptions for 284 yards and four scores.

“They are playing at a very high level,” Crnkovich said. “They need to keep consistently playing at that level so we can give ourselves a chance to win.”

Good protection helped Bennett and Livesay have success against AGWSR.

“I was very impressed with our line in the passing game,” Crnkovich said. “They didn’t give up a sack this game.”

Luke Huntrods had three catches for 30 yards and Jace Huntrods ran for 22 yards. Bennett picked up 21 yards on the ground.

AGWSR ended up with 495 total yards, including 389 on the ground. Simon McKinney made 8.5 tackles, A.J Smith eight, Rylee Scott seven, Bennett six and Kayden McKinney 5.5 for the Spartans.

Penning ran for 161 yards and four touchdowns and also had two catches for 77 yards to lead AGWSR. Cale Culver ran for 91 yards and Opperman threw for 106 and ran for 40.

AGWSR improved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the district. Collins-Maxwell will take a 1-3 overall record and 0-1 district mark into this Friday’s game with rival Baxter (2-2, 1-0).

“Our goal this week is to go 1-0,” Crnkovich said. “It’s simple.”

The Spartans’ game with the Bolts will start at 7 p.m. Friday in Maxwell.
