GRIMES — The Ballard football team turned in another terrific defensive effort on Friday against Dallas Center-Grimes, but for the second game in a row the Bomber offense sputtered in a 7-0 setback.

Ballard held DCG to just 206 yards of total offense on 50 plays. The Bombers also forced two turnovers.

But the Bombers only mustered 170 yards of offense a week after being held to 265 in a 17-14 loss at Carroll.

“DCG made a couple more plays than us, that was the difference,” Ballard co-head coach Corey Vespestad said. “DCG is a well-coached team. Their defense is really good. It was a typical defensive battle between our two teams.”

The only score of the game came 3 ½ minutes into the second quarter. Jake Lego capped a DCG scoring drive with a 1-yard touchdown run.

Linebacker Sam Salasek and defensive back Sam Petersen turned in tremendous games to lead Ballard’s stout defensive effort. Salasek made 13.5 tackles and Petersen had 10 stops.

Rylee Davidson added six tackles and one stop behind the line, Connor Finch made three tackles and one sack and Riley Neel had three tackles and two tackles for loss. Nick Wachad and Reese Broer each recovered a fumble, Mason Murphy totaled 5.5 stops, Logan Harmeyer finished with 4.5 tackles and Mason Askelsen added four stops.

On offense Connor Drew completed 11 of 28 passes for 88 yards with one interception, Nic Edwards had four catches for 48 yards and Nate Nessa ran for 32 yards. Donovan Bertrand tacked on 24 yards rushing, Nolan Schonhorst caught two passes for 17 yards and Bryce Haessig made one 16-yard grab.

Ty Walker completed 11 of 17 passes for 105 yards and added 39 yards rushing for DCG. Caden Grimes made three catches for 55 yards, Luke Busby ran for 33 yards, Lego rushed for 22, Blake Willey had 10 tackles and Jacob Waldron 8.5 stops plus a sack for the Mustangs, who improved to 2-1.

Ballard will take a 1-2 record into this Friday’s homecoming game against Winterset (2-1).

“Each week is going to be a battle — we told our guys this before the season,” Vespestad said. “There are not any easy games on our schedule. We have to go back to work this week and continue to get better.”

The Bombers’ game with Winterset is set to start at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Rich Strouse Field in Huxley.
