HUXLEY - The Ballard girls’ tennis team cruised past Saydel and North Polk in the Class 1A regional first and second rounds Saturday at the Ballard tennis courts in Huxley.


The Bombers whipped Saydel by a 5-1 score and blanked North Polk, 5-0, to improve to 11-1 on the season. Both meets concluded early due to the final outcome being decided before everyone was finished.


Ballard defeated Saydel in the first round. Lindsey Kaldenberg, Rachel Wohlgemuth, Hannah Elliott, Jenna Hernandez and Sarah Kamp were all victorious in singles play for the Bombers.


Kaldenberg defeated Jaedyn Gill in the No. 2 match, 6-2 and 6-1, Wohlgemuth downed Delaney Thompson by 6-2 and 6-4 scores in the No. 3 match and Elliott won the No. 4 match over Gabby Neddermeyer with a pair of 6-1 victories.


Hernandez pulled off 6-0 and 6-4 wins over Saydel’s Linda Lee in the No. 5 match and Kamp turned in the most dominating performance with two 6-0 shutouts over Alyssa Monroe in the No. 6 match.


In their second-round shutout victory over North Polk, Anna Krejcarova won the No. 1 match for Ballard over Chloe Laizure and Kaldenberg, Wohlgemuth, Elliott and Hernandez were all victorious.


Krejcarova defeated Laizure in three sets. She won the first in a 6-0 shutout, suffered a 6-4 seback in the second, then pulled off a 10-8 win in the ultimate tiebreaker.


Kaldenberg downed North Polk’s Rio Monk by 6-2 and 6-3 scores, Wohlgemuth earned 6-0 and 6-3 wins over Zoe Dorr, Elliott pulled off 6-2 and 6-3 victories over Alia Springer and Hernandez won by 6-3 and 7-5 decisions over Liz Vorsten. The meet ended before the No. 6 singles match could be completed.

HUXLEY - Ballard rebounded from its first loss of the season to crush Creston, 8-1, May 9 at the Ballard Tennis Courts in Huxley.


Ballard came back strong from a 7-1 setback at the hands of Waukee by sweeping three doubles matches and dominating singles play to push its season record to 9-1. Every match was played to a pro-8 set.


Anna Krejcarova and Rachel Wohlgemuth scored an 8-4 win over Creston’s Megan Haley and Maddie Frey in the No. 1 doubles match. Lindsey Kaldenberg and Hannah Elliott also won by an 8-4 score in the No. 2 match over Heylee Shields and Karly Calvin.


The No. 3 doubles match saw the Bomber team of Jenna Hernandez and Sarah Kamp whip Morgan Driskell and Sam Dunphy by an 8-3 margin.


The best match of the day came in the No. 3 singles match. Wohlgemuth edged Shields, 9-8, after winning an 11-9 battle in the ultimate tiebreaker.


Wohlgemuth trailed 9-8 in the ultimate tiebreaker before rallying for the win.


Krejcarova, Elliott, Hernandez and Kamp were also victorious in singles play.


Krejcarova rolled to an 8-3 win over Haley in the No. 1 match, Elliott won the No. 4 match over Calvin in an 8-1 rout, Hernandez also prevailed by an 8-1 margin over Driskell in the No. 5 match and Kamp blanked Dunphy, 8-0, in the No. 6 match.
