NEVADA - The Ballard girls’ soccer team split two games at the Nevada Invitational Saturday at Cub Stadium in Nevada
Ballard (5-6-1) placed third in the four-team tournament. The Bombers fell to Panorama in a shootout during the semifinals, and came back strong to down Grinnell in the third-place game.
Ballard scored a 2-1 victory over Grinnell. The Bombers fell behind 1-0 early, but Ellis Giles scored off a great ball from Meg Rietz midway through the first half to even things up.
“Meg was just kind of running down with the ball and I was running with her and she just crossed it to the middle,” Giles said. “I just shot it and it just went in. Those little cross passes, those are what really helps us.”
The winning goal came in the final 18 seconds of the first half. Regen Halsne got another ball from Rietz as the Grinnell keeper was coming out and she managed to get just enough of the ball to slip it past the goal line.
“It was scary because I didn’t know if it was going to go in or not,” Halsne said. “But I was trying my hardest to kick it as hard as I could past her because she was coming right at me. I didn’t know whether I should pass or kick it, so I just went for it.”
The Bombers fell to Panorama, 2-1, during the semifinals.
Panorama led 1-0 in the second half when Sydney Halverson found the net late in the half to tie things up. The game eventually went into a shootout, where Panorama made four shots and Ballard could only convert two.
Sesley Holland and Morgan Catron were the two players to make their penalty kicks for Ballard in the shootout.
BOONE - Ballard scored its second-most lopsided win of the season Friday by handing Boone a 9-0 drubbing at Boone.
Ballard got off 35 shots on goal and keepers Sierra Knight and Sarah Hartman only needed to make one save between them, helping the Bombers earn their fourth victory of the season.
Sydney Halverson pulled off a hat-trick with three goals, Olivia Dee scored twice and Maria Stewart chipped in one goal and assist apiece for Ballard. Meg Rietz, Sesley Holland and Karlee Emerson each added one goal for the Bombers.
COLFAX - Ballard snapped a six-game winless streak by outclassing Prairie City-Monroe, 4-1, May 6 at Colfax.
Brooke Loewe scored twice to help Ballard improve to 3-5-1 on the season. Sydney Halverson and Olivia Dee each added a goal for the Bombers.
Ballard dominated possession, getting off 37 shots. Loewe was especially active, finishing with 16 shots.
Sierra Knight made three saves at keeper for Ballard. Bella Stone scored PCM’s goal off an assist by Emma George.
